Head lice is a common and very frustrating part of childhood. Over time I have spent hundreds of dollars on expensive products that promise to kill headlice and eggs and I found they don’t work.

The headlice even bulid up a resistance to products so they are less effective! There is a much cheaper and more natural solution for removal.

1. Cover dry hair with conditioner.

2. Using a nit comb, comb through a small part of the hair at a time and comb all hair. This can take time but will be the most effective way of removing every egg and lice.

3. You need to follow this procedure every few days until the headlice are gone, as if you missed just one egg, the lice will come back. It will take a few sessions.

I have tried this when my girls school had an outbreak that lasted months and no other product worked like this. It is also much better for the children’s scalps and much more cost effective.

  • I’ve got a new school starter this year and so far we’ve avoided head lice, but it’s good to know there is a cheaper and not so toxic method of removing them

  • Such a frustrating experience for both parents and children. I’m not looking forward to my own children experiencing this – I know how hard a time friends have had with their children. Will remember this tip

  • Can we send the kids to school tho if there are still lice in their hair. This says to repeat wvery 3 days??? So would that mean they are still able to pass on lice etc.

  • We used this method and it didn’t work at all !! We spent afternoon after afternoon hours after hours to treat the head-lice of 3 of my children, from which my son was the worst. We tried to count the amount of lice we removed per session and it was between the 500 and +1000 !!! On a certain point I treated them every other day in this way with no effect. Of course I tried all the remedies on the market as well and spend many $$$. Then I read a facebook post from a friend of mine about head-lice where one of her friends suggested lice-treatment for dogs !! As I’m a person who’s all pro natural I didn’t think about doing this. But in the end I was so desperate that I went to the pet shop and bought that stuff and applied a couple of drops of this oil on my children’s heads. And since then, now about a year later, we never ever saw 11 head-lice again !

  • Aaarrgghh! Head lice. Once you start Primary School, it’s unavoidable. My son who had very short hair had head lice a few times. We did all the right things and used a number of different methods, ridding his head of lice. Only for it to return again when others in the class did not treat their hair. I recall reading with a poor little girl who’s hair was just teeming with lice. I had to report it to the teacher who shared my sadness at the process that would require this girl to leave the school (with her siblings who also had head lice) only to return at a later date with her hair untreated by her mother. It made me so sad for those children.

  • This method works brilliantly. I did this with my daughter, who seemed to pick them up so easily in her waist length hair. The trick is to do it every three or so days for a couple weeks and comb really carefully. We tried all the chemicals, and other than causing a lot of irritation, they never really got rid of the eggs or nits.

  • Never heard this one before – as kids my mum got a Robi Comb to use on my sister and I, and it worked brilliantly. My sister had several outbreaks of them and it sorted them quickly.
I bought one myself for my kids when my eldest came home from her 2nd day of kindy with the lovely “there’s an outbreak of nits in your child’s class”

  • Yes, this works well. Head lice love clean hair, because they can hold on well. Other than conditioner, using canola (or other kitchen) oil and combing through with a nit comb works too, but conditioner is much more pleasant. I’ve used a number of commercial products over the years, but some outbreaks seem more resistant to certain brands, and next outbreak may be a different brand. The conditioner trick though is fantastic! (Remember to wash pillow cases and hats when treating your kids too).

  • Just hearing or seeing the word nits makes my head itchy. God awful little critters!
