Paper mache is not only a great craft activity for the kids, it can be used to make gorgeous gifts like these paper mache bowls.

Paper mache bowl

What you’ll need:

  • Flour
  • Water
  • Salt
  • Newspaper
  • Paint
  • Varnish
  • Bowl
  • Cling film wrap

Method:

  1. Cover a bowl with cling wrap – you use the bowl to make the shape so choose a size you want your paper mache bowl to be.
  2. Make your paper mache paste using 1 cup of flour and enough water to make it the consistency of thin pancake batter. Add a couple of teaspoons of salt. Whisk until smooth.
  3. Cut strips of newspaper and dip one at a time in your paste.
  4. Remove excess paste from newspaper and place on the bottom of the bowl you have covered with 2 layers.
  5. Repeat until the bowl is covered.
  6. Leave to dry
  7. Repeat steps 2 to 6, to add another layer and to make your bowl stronger.
  8. Trim edges of the bowl with scissors as required to make smooth.
  9. Paint your bowl in your choice of colours and leave to dry.
  10. Add varnish to seal your bowl and leave to dry.
  11. Your bowl is ready to display or gift.

These are gorgeous and would make lovely presents. The kids would have so much fun making these.

  • We used a similar method to reinforce a carton. We glued strips of newspaper on it, letting some dry before we put more on. We then put some plain paper on it, let it dry and stuck pictures on it. They didn’t have to be cut out perfectly. We overlapped them. A few days later when we were sure it was 100% dry. We gave it a coat of clear lacquer. In it we stored pictures and photos we had saved to use as illustrations for school assignments. Some of them we saved from travel brochures, magazines, newspaper clippings. Sometimes the information on the same sheets of paper were outdated so we only used the pictures etc. At the time it was fun finding them rather than watch TV programs that weren’t suitable for us, particularly in cold wet weather.

  • My daughter and I used to make lots of things out of paper mache. Unfortunately we didn’t varnish them after painting and after a while they got mouldy and had to be thrown out.
