Mums share tips on how to make the perfect bread roll in a pie maker.

When one mum asked why her rolls didn’t come out quite perfect, the internet provided her with just the answer she needed.

Posting in Kmart Pie Maker Recipes, Tips and Ideas Australia group Esther shared,

“So, I did bread rolls in the PM tonight. They were tasty enough for us (mmmm, butter), but I’m wondering if people doing bread in the machine have better recipes.

My recipe was: mix in a bowl these ingredients:
– 400g plain flour
– packet of yeast
– pinch of sugar
– pinch of salt

Slowly add up to 250ml of warm water until the dough is sticky enough to roll into a ball. If too sticky, add a little flour.

Oil hands with vegetable oil, then knead dough ball on a floured board for 7 minutes. Put back in the bowl, under a clean tea towel for an hour. When the dough is risen, roll into palm-size balls and put one each in the PM cavities. Cook 15 minutes.”

The tips soon started rolling in. (pardon the pun!)

The trick to making the perfect bread roll is actually in the cooking. Apparently you should cook them twice. Yes, twice!

Marg shared, “Bread rolls need to rise twice….I have been a bread baker for years… I suggest you put the rolls into the sockets (heated) after they have risen a second time. Place the rolled balls on a tray and cover with a tea towel or plastic bag…after about 30 mins you will notice a huge difference. Gently pick up and place in heated PM.”

Carly agreed, “You need to rise them again. So follow those same instructions and put into maker cavity not switched on and allow to rise again. Once risen turn on and cook. Also use bakers flour for best results it’s about 10 bucks a bag for a huge ass lot at Coles or woollies will last you ages. You’ll get much better results.”

Another fan also agreed saying, “I know this will sound odd but in addition to the fat or oil and bread improver mentioned above, a bit of milk powder. Same amount are the improver. And yes absolutely let them rise twice. If you have time, let the 2nd rise be for an hour or more. Just remember to portion smaller than what your piemaker is. I mak erolls in my piemaker and they have turned out beautifully. Not heavy, not doughy.”

  • I make this recipe, rise the dough balls twice then cook in my oven – just as good as a pie maker but no extra gadget required.

Our oven still isn’t fixed because we are in a hotspot area so can’t get anyone out at the moment.
