Many of our memories of Christmas are tied up with particular smells and aromas.

Whether it is the gentle spice of Christmas cake or mince pies, or the fresh smell of a real Christmas tree, the aromas around Christmas are an important part of the season.

But did you know that you can help make new Christmas memories and revive old ones using essential oils?

Recommended essential oils for Christmas

Some of the essential oils that work particularly well at Christmas include – cinnamon leaf, orange sweet, clove bud, frankincense, pine, cypress, mandarin, lime, ginger, cedarwood and sandalwood.

Here are 5 ways to use these Essential Oils for an Aromatic Christmas -

  1. Use a Diffuser

Put 6-8 drops of essential oil in a diffuser or vaporiser to set the mood. Christmas is also a good time to bring out the oil burner (don’t forget to use one with plenty of water) as the glow of a candle can really add to the atmosphere.

  2. Make your own aromatic room spray

Mix 20-30 drops of essential oil with a teaspoon of essential oil dispersant in a 50ml spray bottle. Top up with water and shake to mix. Spray into the air for a gentle fragrance.

  3. Create your own aromatic paper or cards

Add the scent of Christmas to your gifts by placing your Christmas cards or wrapping paper in a large plastic bag with a tissue or cotton wool ball on which you have placed a few drops of essential oil. Seal the bag (zip lock bags are good for this) and leave for at least a week (longer if you can) to allow the smell to infuse the paper

  4. A last minute Aromatic Gift trick

If you don’t have time to infuse your paper, you can instead put a single drop of essential oil on the ribbon of your parcel. (avoid dropping oil directly on paper as it may damage some finishes.)

  5. It’s not only real trees that smell great!

Real Christmas trees have a wonderful fresh aroma that always makes me think of Christmas. But even an artificial tree can have a great smell if you put some essential oil on a few cotton wool balls and tuck them in between the branches.

Try a few of these ideas and start your own aromatic Christmas tradition!

  • I enjoyed your article but….not ideal if you or a visitor suffers from asthma or hayfever or sinus problems which are aggravated by aromas, scents etc.

    • Thanks for commenting and you raise a great point. You should always take into account your own health issues as well as those of people around you and adjust your usage accordingly. Most recommendations on the internet and in books are for the average person, and will not take into account all sensitivities. And some people can be very sensitive to aromas, even if they are from natural products like essential oils. Thank you for your input! :)
