Dogs on a raw meat diet can potentially pass on dangerous bacteria, including salmonella and E. coli.

Swedish researchers looked at samples from 60 packs of raw meat products in 2017 made by 10 manufacturers in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Germany and England.

According to the study published in Vet Record, all samples contained the potentially harmful Enterobacteriaceae family of bacteri, and more than half had levels that exceeded the European Union maximum threshold, shares 10 Daily.

Gastro-causing salmonella was found in seven percent of samples while E. coli was found in one-third of the samples.

Both bacteria can be fatal in the elderly, infants and immunosuppressed people.

The scientists determined that one of the easiest ways dogs can pass on this bacteria is by giving their humans a big sloppy kiss.

“A great opportunity for dogs to transfer potential pathogenic and antimicrobial-resistant bacteria to humans is by ‘kissing’ people in the face immediately after they have eaten,” the researchers wrote.

  • As my Vet says “Dogs mouths are full of nasty bacteria and you should never allow them to lick peoples faces especially young children”

  • The thought of any animal licking faces is just gross really, most lick their butts and eat all sorts of things that would make humans sick.

  • My dogs weren’t fed raw meat when I had small children at home. But now I’m a better pet owner, I do feed them raw meet. It’s good for them and there’s been no issues, they often lick my hubby’s face

  • If you have children make sure the dog doesn’t lick their faces – you know what else the dog has licked!

  • No dog should be licking a child’s face regardless of if it ate meat or not. I recently witnessed a dog licking faces while at a friend’s house & one of the kid’s broke out in hives almost to a point where it was an anaphylactic episode. Something the dog had eaten reacted with her allergies & because the parents did not realise the dog was doing it she could very easily have needed to go to hospital. My dog was there as well but doesn’t lick the kids because he has been taught not to, a dog’s mouth is full of nasty bacteria so kids have little chance of fighting off those germs. None of my dogs have ever licked faces because they were taught not to when pups.

  • No, I don’t but this is good to know. I love and adore my dog, too, but don’t love him licking my lips.

  • I feed Raw to my dog, I follow standard hygiene when preparing and storing any raw meat. You should be careful around any dog not just raw fed dogs. For one throughout the world there has been many more dried food recalled due to salmonella contamination, dogs are not clean animals and will stick there face in anything, eat anything and roll in anything. I do appreciate highlighting the fact you shouldn’t let a raw fed dog lick your children, however it kind of implies it’s perfectly fine to let other dogs!

  • Oh wow, good to know. I really love animals but hate it when they lick your face.

  • I hardly ever feed my dog raw meat but this is good to know. On the odd occasion I’ll give her chicken breast diced up. When she gives me kisses I only let her kiss me under the chin. Always done this but now I have an even better reason for continuing this.
