Parents in the US have shared what they thought was a funny problem but it soon divided the internet.

A mother can be heard behind the camera giggling as she tells her seven-month-old daughter in the clip her name is not ‘Alexa’, (the name of the voice-activated smart device), which they’ve obviously been using a lot since their bubs birth.

Attempting to get the baby girl to respond to her actual name, which is Caroline, the mum continues to call out to her.

But the baby only looks up when her mum calls out the name “Alexa”.

The short clip appeared on Good Morning America and has been watched over 45,000 times already.

However, the internet is divided over the weird situation.

Some think it’s a sweet video, even suggesting a name change is in order.

“She is too cute. I think Caroline just changed her name. She likes Alexa much better, lol Too cute,” one viewer commented.

“Better than Google!”

While others have commented on how sad and pathetic it is.

“This is so sad. What has happened to people?” one person asked.

Another user didn’t hold back, calling it “Not funny. Kinda sad and pathetic”.

“Wow this is sad, this means they never call this baby by her name! She should know her own name… Sad times we live in,” another person commented.

  • Dont you just love judgey people?

  • The parents have posted this as a source of humour, and a sign of tech times. We used to make up preferred names when little from our favourite tv shows.

  • It is funny, but it’s also worrying.

  • Parents, we have different opinions to what is funny and to what is not. She is cutie with those brown beautiful eye’s.

  • People are so quick to judge. Kids sometimes latch onto things unless you’ve seen more than one video you don’t have enough information to be making judgments.

  • Not funny. Clearly Alexa is a priority in the household. So much that their child is confused.

  • They obviously use Alexa a lot and maybe dont interact with Caroline actually calling her name to her face much hence the confusion for her. Cute video

  • People are so nasty. This is a sweet video and something they would have looked back on, and repeated the funny story for years to come.
Thats possibly been ruined now by nasty comments!

  • When the parents would use the name Caroline consequently and not even mention the name Alexa, then I’m sure she would respond. Reading this I just think the parents don’t have a problem with it and seem to think it’s funny indeed. Might be a bit confusing.

  • You would hope that the baby is just interested in the name to see where Alexa is rather than answering to it!

  • Caroline has obviously heard Alexa so many times that she thinks her name is Alexa. Some electronic devices “talk” Is that what the one in her room is saying? Is her Mum relying on the device for communication with her daughter rather than spending “physical time” with her?

  • She is probably just looking around trying to catch who Alexa is. When she hears her name she’s probably thinking “What have I done now”. She is just so precious

  • I don’t think the child thinks this is her name. She seems to be looking around when she hears Alexa, as if she is waiting for something to happen. When her mother says her name nothing happens. But when her mother uses Alexa something usually happens i.e. the lights turn on, a tv turns on, music plays etc. Young children are going to respond to interesting stimuli. I don’t think this is funny but I also don’t think it is particularly concerning. The child simply seems to be responding to her environment in a way that most children in her situation would.

  • This is so 21st century sad, these kids are not going to have a normal childhood makes me wonder how they will become well rounded adults

  • How terrible, poor kid, getting confused, the parent should not use Alexa when the child is awake, might solve the problem.
