When one of our MoM team was in a bit of a flap about making a birthday cake for her kids the awesome internet came to her rescue.

Lisa shared, “This is the cake I am going to *attempt* to make for my kid’s birthday party. I’ve watched some youtube videos but feel completely overwhelmed by the challenge. Have you ever made anything like this? Please share your cakes and your tips (fails are good too – they may make me feel better)”

Tips to create the perfect drip cake

Julie was great saying, “These drip cakes aren’t hard but are time consuming. Make sure you have the cake once covered in buttercream COLD before attempting the drips ”

Heather told us, “Be careful with the ganache it will keep dripping. A little goes a long way.”

Rosalie said, “Use lollies or prepaid decorations rather than piping anything and the hardest part will be getting the icing right. If you are using food colouring get the gel food colouring so much better and brighter! And if you can freeze the cake first it helps reduce the crumbs a bit.”

Kendall shared, “My tip is to go to Spotlight and find the neon pink and blue icing colouring. Normal food colouring will not give you the vibrant colours.” She also added, “Also I didn’t use ganache for the drips. I used icing sugar, a tiny bit of butter and milk to make it a thin consistency. Put it straight into the fridge once you finish doing the drips.”

Kalene shared, “Drip cakes are a fun cake to create, but you have to have the ratio of cream to chocolate correct. Too much cream means it will drip to the cake board and pool add too much chocolate and the drip will be too thick. Make sure your final buttercream layer is super cold as this will help set your drips! And dont forget a crumb layer!”

Danielle suggested, “Tip use equal weights of cream and chocolate to make your ganache for the drip. Buy a plastic sauce bottle from Kmart to actually drip it not a piping bag. Wait until it cools a bit too or the icing underneath melt!”

Check out some of the amazing creations below

The first pic is of Lisa’s creation thanks to the help of the internet. Mind you the kids preferred the rushed job that was sent to school a few days later. Typical!

  • One year I found these marshmallows that were all different colours and shapes. I made a chocolate cake and just randomly placed the marshmallows all over the top and I got so many positive comments. Was so easy but looked impressive.

  • Some of those cakes look amazing, but a lot of these are for really young kids and are they going to remember these cakes?. I am so glad this era is over for me as the pressure is unbelievable for parents. I think a lot of these fancy cakes and the really expensive parties inviting the entire class has gone overboard. Whatever happened to a simple kids party, with 6 or 8 close friends and a nice home made cake? It seems to be about showing off with the biggest party, best cake and putting it on social media.

  • I made all my kids birthday cakes, without the Internet, just a book of party cakes. Some I created myself, I had an image in my mind, and the cake rarely matched the image. But they were ok and the kids loved them. My most ambitious I think was a treasure chest full of treasure for my daughters 12th birthday party. I think parents try too hard to impress these days, and it’s not necessary as kids aren’t hard to impress
