Kristen Bell, the actress who voiced Princess Anna in “Frozen” has a bone to pick with Snow White.

Although she admits she will read the Disney classic to her young daughters, Lincoln, 5, and Delta, 3, she always makes sure to incorporate a “stranger-danger” lesson with it.

“Every time we close Snow White I look at my girls and ask, ‘Don’t you think it’s weird that Snow White didn’t ask the old witch why she needed to eat the apple? Or where she got that apple?'” she told Parents magazine.

“I say, ‘I would never take food from a stranger, would you?’ And my kids are like, ‘No!’ And I’m like, ‘Okay, I’m doing something right.'”

She also uses the story to talk about the importance of consent, specifically when Prince Charming plants a wet one on the snoozing princess, shares TODAY.

“Don’t you think that it’s weird that the prince kisses Snow White without her permission?” Bell said she tells her daughters. “Because you cannot kiss someone if they’re sleeping!”

She is not alone!

Keira Knightley also admits that she prohibits her 3-year-old daughter, Edie, from watching certain animated classics.

“Cinderella, banned because she waits around for a rich guy to rescue her,” she told Ellen DeGeneres during a recent visit to the talk show program. “Don’t. Rescue yourself, obviously.”

“This is the one that I’m quite annoyed about because I really like the film, but ‘Little Mermaid,’” she said. “I mean, the songs are great, but do not give your voice up for a man. Hello!”

  • Most fairy stories are based on true happenings way back when and unless it is researched then you don’t understand the story. And it’s no good putting modern idioms onto an olden day story. Things have changed dramatically during the ages. When these stories were written women didn’t work and earn money, and they were the chattel of their husband. These were dreams to get them through the drudgery of life back then.

  • Good on her for teaching stranger danger to her kids

  • If we dig deep enough, all fairy tales have badness in them. I think we just need to remember they are fairy tales, not news stories. They’re meant to be frivolous and fun and not taken too seriously

  • Maybe we need a rewrite of some of our most loved disney favourites.

  • Wow I didn’t see this side of fairytales before. It’s good Kirsten is making awareness of these inappropriate events. Kids need to be taught right from wrong and where is a better place to start: in a fairytale book.

  • Very on to it!

  • I tend to buy as a gift a book called ‘goodnight stories for rebel girls’ or fairytales for feisty girls, they’re not your usual, different messages :)

  • While I think it was good to talk about those things with her kids, you can’t ban classic fairy tales, and that’s exactly what they are tales. I grew up fine reading and watching them and so has my daughter

  • Perhaps it’s time for some new children’s stories.

  • Snow white has been around for years and is such a great role model for younger woman and girls. Yes she has made mistakes, but that is what girls watching can learn by

  • What about the boys who watch this movie with the girls (possibly their sisters)???
Boys should be taught not to talk to strangers too. Both our kids watched and loved Frozen.

  • Whilst she had a point Something to remember is these stories were written in a different era…. and they are fairy tales…make believe!

  • and this is why I admire Kristen Bell! – such a great lesson to be teaching our girls and I think delivered in a much better way than just telling them not to take candy from strangers!

I like the concept of not waiting around for a rich guy to save you, but I am not so sure I would ban my girls from watching the movie – I am a sucker for Classic Disney movies though.

I do like that my girls LOVE Mirada’s character from the movie Brave – and they like the movie Moana which has strong female characters.

If we want things to change we need to instill the changes in our daughters and empower them !

  • Totally agree. My 4 year old asked me why Snow White took the apple off the weird old lady and I congratulated her for asking the question. I’m glad my daughter is at the age of asking why about everything!
