To my darling children, sometimes when you sleep, I look at you and I can’t believe that I made you from scratch.

As your Mum, I worry that I am teaching you all that you need to know to live well. It is my job to give you the tools to go out into the world and be the best that you can be.

Not only do I worry about telling you what is important, I worry about showing you. I know that at times I am deeply flawed and there are moments when I am sorry that I might fail.

I dream of a world that is fair and just. I dream of a world where you will never get hurt. I dream of a world where everyone is kind. The world is not always what I dream, but despite that, I hope I can give you the tools to dream that dream too.

When times are tough, or your backs are against the wall, please remember the following and remember that I love you.

What goes around comes around. I am still not sure if this works on every occasion, as I have dealt with some truly evil devil spawn shits, but I would like to think that what goes around comes around.

Treat people as you would like to be treated even if someone is treating you like shit. And if you can’t be civil then walk away because if someone has made you feel truly bad about yourself, then they aren’t worth your spit. If someone is treating you terribly, chances are, it is more about them than it is about you. If that is the case then it is not your problem.

I am the world’s worst person for obsessing about things and taking so much on board that I become a psychotic nutcase. Don’t be like me. Be like I am telling you. I am your mother, so do as you are told.

Slow down. Slow down as much as you can. We all need moments of doing nothing and moments when you can appreciate how sweet life is. Life goes by so quickly and we don’t need to increase the pace of life to keep up. Slow down on occasion and savour the amazing world we live in.

If life is moving so quickly that you can’t include simple things like enjoying a sunset or lying on the grass in the sun, then you are missing the point, and you are moving too fast. Slow down.

Keep life simple. Need less things. Learn to live a life where you need less. It is almost ingrained in us to want a life filled with things. The new smart phone, a shinier car, a new outfit, the 8 burner BBQ, the new carpets, the smart TV, the iPads.

Work out what you really need and go from there. Learn to live with less, and you will appreciate more what you have got. It will also make you lighter and make more things possible. Once again, I am your mother, so you must listen to me.

Learn to say Fuck off. I do not mean this literally. I will give you this letter when you are 18, so I am assuming foul language will not make you blush. Regardless, I do not want you to talk like a pirate or cuss like your mother does. I am talking about the philosophy of saying fuck off.

Say it in your head when someone asks you to do something unreasonable and tell them politely no thank you. If someone mistreats you then you tell them to fuck off. If something is not right and it makes you feel bad, say it in your head and disappear.

Learn to look after yourself and others and the world you live in and learn to say fuck off. Don’t let anyone take advantage of you and remember what I whisper to you at night. You are strong, you are kind, you are brave and you are important. Anyone who makes you feel less than that does not belong in your life.

You both asked me recently if it was wrong of you to believe in magic. It filled my heart with dread and I thought we were going to have to have that awful talk about Santa Claus. But I refuse to because I am having one more year of you being my wide-eyed children who believe in a time of the year when magic fills the air.

It is not only right to believe in magic. It is vital that you do. It is so important to believe in things that you can’t see. Just because you can’t see something does not mean you can’t feel it, hear it, see it in your mind’s eye or soar on the wings of your imagination with it. I am 45 years old and I still believe in magic.

I believe in almost everything. I still believe in unicorns, in a world where good will prevail. In a world where Donald Trump can’t be President. In a world where everything can start with something beautiful, in a world where there is more good than evil. In a world where dreams come true. All of this is possible if you believe in a little magic. Save room for magic and never stop believing.

Please remember what goes around comes around, treat others as you would like to be treated. Keep life simple and need less things, learn to say fuck off. Believe in magic.

I am sorry when I stumble. But when I do, I will always get up again because I am your mum and your biggest fan.

Love,

Your Mummy.

  • What a beautiful letter to your twins

  • Well written – I think you conveyed your concept well. The swearing is merely a devise to emphasize the importance of being yourself and standing up for yourself.

  • Lovely letter – but the swearing isn’t necessary.

  • This was obviously written before Trump became the President.
I would say “get lost” not “f**k off”

    • It was actually written after he became President – thus the line “believe in a world where Donald Trump can’t be President:. I believe that each to their own and whatever works for you is the best policy.

  • An interesting letter, don’t know about the swearing though!

    • The swearing is due to the fact I cuss like a pirate. The letters are for my twins when they are much older. I also think the sentiments of some words express quite succinctly the exact message you are trying to convey. A personal choice really.

  • A beautiful letter with wisdom and I like the similarity in the letter – to the line in the book The Help – You is kind, You is smart, You is important. The most beautiful and profound words in a book and a movie.

    • Thank you. I love that wisdom or making your kids feel as important, strong and kind as you possibly can.

  • A nice letter but I too wonder why people feel the need to share such personal things.

    • They may be very personal things, but they are also very universal things. Some things, despite the personal, I believe are good to be shared. Each to their own I know, but sharing the views of what goes around comes around, treat others as you would be treated, needing less things, telling people go go away (be it like a pirate or a princess), and believing in magic are not things I keep as personal things to be shared with my kids only, but rather a way of life that I hope they embrace as they grow.

  • What a lovely sentiment in this letter. If she can put the written word into practice, I’m sure she’ll do fine

    • Thank you so much for your lovely words. I try every day, though occasionally I stumble.

  • A nice and well written letter. I’m not sure that things like this should be shared really. It’s rather a personal time.

    • Yeah I was wondering as well what the motives are to write and share this letter.

      • They may be very personal things, but they are also very universal things. My motives are simply that I am of the opinion that some things, despite being personal, I believe are good to be shared.

  • What a beautiful letter. I think you might be doing just fine as a mum.

    • I agree – a well written letter and the honesty is refreshing.

      • Thank you so much lovelies. Being a mum is hard sometimes and honesty is sometimes scary. Thanks for your kind words.
