Fast food giant McDonald’s is giving their Drive Thru system a makeover that will personalise your takeaway experience!

McDonald’s have announced that their Drive Thru system will be getting a 21st-century overhaul thanks to a $420 million deal with Israeli technology company Dynamic Yield Nine News reports. Using artificial intelligence and ‘design-logic’ technology customers’ Drive Thru experiences will be personalised like never before.

Mind Readers

The new technology has the potential to not only make your ordering experience easier but even help you decide what to order! Numberplates will be able to be scanned to make predictions based on previous orders, and a special algorithm can also be used to offer suggestions depending on the weather and time of day. McDonald’s say they are excited to roll out the changes.

“McDonald’s will utilise this decision technology to provide an even more personalised customer experience by varying outdoor digital Drive Thru menu displays to show food based on a time of day, weather, current restaurant traffic and trending menu items,” McDonald’s said in a statement. “The decision technology can also instantly suggest and display additional items to a customer’s order based on their current selections.” This sounds like a dream for those that still can’t make up their mind when they reach the menu!

Global Plans

While a trial of the new Drive Thru technology is set to roll out in the US later this year, McDonald’s say they have plans to expand the updates within their international market including Australia! It is hoped that the technology can also be integrated into existing services such as self-serve kiosks and the mobile app. “With this acquisition, we’re expanding both our ability to increase the role technology and data will play in our future and the speed with which we’ll be able to implement our vision of creating more personalised experiences for our customers,” they said.

We just hope that Drive Thru lines don’t get longer and slower with so many options to choose from!!

  • We don’t go often enough for the number plate scanning to be helpful and we usually order different stuff when we do go through

  • Wow. Big brother-ish in a way huh?

  • Interestingly there seem to be more and more places scanning license plates from parking at shopping centers & e-tags now to Maccas for meals!

  • Unless the Drive Through has a list of the ingredients of what you order I don’t think it is legal in SA, not sure about the rest of Aust.
It would make more sense if they changed the toys from something that has small pieces and is not suitable for children under the age of at least 3 y.o…..to something like a small book or something which is safe,

  • I don’t like the fact they want to scan your number plate! Technology is crazy, I feel it’s becoming an invasion of privacy somewhat!
Why do maccas need to read our minds? We can change them, right?!

  • I don’t agree with the whole “It’s maccas and not rocket science what they have” but yeah it is when they keep adding new items etc. I am not sure this idea will be useful but I would still like to see it anyway.

  • What a novel idea but completely useless in the real world. I have a list when I go through Maccas drive through and its maybe a yearly trip. So I doubt they could suggest much for me

  • Crazy! All I want them to change is having the whole menus displayed there so I’m not having to ask 1000 questions about what they have! Not just the meals

    • I very rarely get take out, but I agree with you on this! It’s so confusing and then I feel bad holding the other cars up!

  • Oh this is cool, technology is changing the world

  • Big concerns about privacy and storing information!!

  • I’m not keen on the idea of it retaining my number plate.

  • Sounds interesting if you buy a second hand car

  • not sure if I like this one

  • Pretty soon there will be one central computer that will know everything about us. I cherish my privacy and this doesn’t sound good to me.
