A midwife has offered some helpful advice to women about their concerns around pubic hair and giving birth.

Sharing her advice on Reddit, the midwife reassured women that they really don’t need to worry about their pubic hair during childbirth.

“We don’t even notice so long as you have showered in the last week,” she wrote.

“As long as the baby can come out, we don’t care it you’re full bush, bald as a baby or something exciting like a lightening bolt/vajazzled.”

“It doesn’t affect stitches or anything to do with our work,” she explained, adding that if the woman requires a caesarean section the incision site will be shaved with a sterilised razor anyway.

“Please don’t get yourself into an uncomfortable position trying to do something for us, cause we won’t even notice,” the midwife added.

A few replies to the post thanked the woman for her reassurance, but the majority of the replies were actually questions.

Genital piercings were a popular topic, with several people asking if they’d have to take their own out to give birth.

“I’ve had both in and out, sometimes they can’t get the piercing out,” the midwife wrote.

“I haven’t had one rip out yet… but it’s definitely a possibility.”

Another person added – “As an ob/gyn – 100% agreed. And it’s not only pubic hair… hemorrhoids, interesting tattoos and piercings in your nether areas… anyone who’s been delivering babies for a few years has seen it all. Aside from safety and some basic hygiene, it really doesn’t bother us.”

  • Pubic hair is natural and normal and it does not surprise me one bit that they do not care and it would not matter if they did. There are so many other things going on and to worry about when having a baby and pubic hair is a non issue.

  • This isn’t something I’d ever wondered, but it’s an interesting article to read.

  • I’m sure a lot of women will be reassured by this.

  • Women shouldn’t worry about this, I agree, the health and safety of mother and baby is rightly the priority.

  • I love this. Pubic hair is not a priority. I agree. My entire pregnancy was hellish suffering morning sickness 24/7 for the duration so pubic hair was not a consideration at all. Good to know it didn’t matter.

  • Midwives are professionals so I would expect like any professional they would focus on what’s important but good on her for putting peoples minds at ease.

  • Women who groom themselves before labour are nuts! There are more important things to worry about.

    • Why would anyone risk possible cuts or ingrown hairs by removing pubic hairs.

  • Oh great to know
