A model has strutted down the runway at the Sports Illustrated swimsuit show while breastfeeding her five-month-old daughter.

Mara Martin took to the runway on Sunday night in Miami, Florida for the 2018 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit show.

The proud mother was one of 16 finalists selected from an open casting call to take part in the runway show as part of Miami Swim Weeek.

Mara took to instagram today to share her surprise at making the headlines for something she does everyday.

“Wow! WHAT A NIGHT! Words can’t even describe how amazing I feel after being picked to walk the runway for @si_swimsuit. Anyone who knows me, knows it has been a life long dream of mine.

I can’t believe I am waking up to headlines with me and my daughter in them for doing something I do every day. It is truly so humbling and unreal to say the least. I’m so grateful to be able to share this message and hopefully normalize breastfeeding and also show others that women CAN DO IT ALL!

But to be honest, the real reason I can’t believe it is a headline is because it shouldn’t be a headline!!! My story of being a mother and feeding her while walking is just that. Last night there are far more deserving headlines that our world should see.

One woman is going to boot camp in two weeks to serve our country (sorry i don’t know your IG handle ), one woman had a mastectomy (@allynrose), and another is a cancer survivor, 2x paralympic gold medalist, as well as a mother herself (@bren_hucks you rock)

Those are the stories that our world should be discussing!!!! Just thinking about all that was represented there… I desperately need to give the most thanks to @mj_day for this. She supported me in what I did last night. Without her support this wouldn’t even be discussed!!!! She and the entire Sports Illustrated family are the most amazing and incredible team to have worked with.

THANK YOU for letting all 16 of us be our true selves, strong beautiful women!!! Because of you, my daughter is going to grow up in a better world, where she will always feel this way!!!!!!

Lastly, to every single woman that rocked that runway with me. Be proud. I know I am of you! You all have inspired me in ways unimaginable. I love you all!!!”

  • I am shocked that she’s in shape after so recently having a baby, and swimsuit ready too. Not sure why she would need to walk the cat walk while breast feeding

  • In how many places of employment is the Mum allowed to do work while breastfeeding. Normally employees take a break while they do that or manage to do it during their meal breaks.

  • Good on this mumma !!

  • She’s probably just showing that no matter where you go it’s alright to breastfeed, which I entirely agree breastfeeding is natural we should be feeling more comfortable than trying to run to a room to breastfeed I say free the nips ☺️ Not entirely lol just for baby

  • No need to walk on the catwalk if you don’t want extra attention. I don’t care less if someone is breastfeeding, in fact I’d encourage it just don’t expect no-one to notice if you are doing the job of a model.

  • Agree with her comments wholeheartedly. Breastfeeding is a natural act as is walking so why not on a runway. It was tastefully done as well for all including her baby.

  • I have done many things while breastfeeding and walking is certainly one but I don;t understand why she would do that on a catwalk?

  • Whilst it doesn’t bother me at all and I think you go girl for breastfeeding, I’m sure she would have to be aware that it would cause some extra attention.

  • It certainly would be polarising for the media, but good to raise awareness I guess, although I was always for covering up.

  • Breast feeding is an everyday act for those can breastfeed.

    • This was bound to make headlines and highlighting the normality of being a mum and being able to breastfeed.

  • You go girl!
No matter what you do there is always that one person or a few that are going to judge.
Yes this something that should make headlines not because it’s an outrageous thing to do. But because the world needs mothers like this to show others that it is okay to breastfeed in public. We should feel pressure to feed our baby isolated from the rest of the world. It’s a natural thing to do. If you don’t like it simply move on and don’t judge.

  • It’s sad that such a natural thing is made out to be such a big deal, and I doubt it would have had the same impact if she had walked whilst feeding her baby with a bottle. Good on her for doing her bit to normalise breastfeeding, although it’s such a shame that it needs to be normalised! Also, at the end of the day fed is best, whether it’s breastfed or bottle!

  • Of course she made the headlines!
It’s a natural function, that not everyone is blessed to provide their baby. But when out and about people glare when the baby cries and glare more if you start breast feeding them. Glare all you like! It’s better for Bub and maybe some positive exposure will follow.

  • Such a natural function! Can’t believe people still frown upon it.

  • Very nice to see! :-)
