Hello!

Hi MoM, I am wondering if your community might be able to help me out. I have a 14 year old daughter who has always done well with school, always seems happy to go and when she gets home will complete her homework but this year she seems to have completely lost interest – has anyone else been through this and how did you handle it? How do you deal with a 14 year old has lost interest in school? Thanks!

  • Sit down with her and talk with her and see if there are other issues that may be arising.

  • Ah yes kymichelle it is …so we would be about a year on now…I wonder how she got on ???

  • Sorry, just realised this is an old question and that I’d commented on it previously (on my tablet its hard to see)

  • This is very common, so much so that our local Catholic school (and many other schools ) now has a separate area for Grade 9 (14-15 year olds). Research has shown its a crucial year to keep them interested so they are more likely to succeed and continue on to further education. My nephew is in grade 9 at the catholic school and they have different classrooms on the other side of the school, and the focus is on doing subjects they enjoy and might want to persue rather than what they traditionally have to do. I remember reading an article about it and it made sense. I also have a son in Grade 9 so am constantly looking for signs he might be losing interest.

Long story short, its common. Maybe talk to someone at the school, and also tell your daughter that its common to feel this way at this stage of schooling.

  • Is your daughter struggling with the work load,if not maybe there are other issues. She may be hanging out with a not so conscientous group of friends or has her mind centred on a boy at school. I think you need to get closer to your daughter and talk a bit more.Bullying could be an issue too.

  • I don’t want to alarm you but you can’t discount involvement with drugs even at 14 it may not be this but check it out! Also a medical check up wouldn’t hurt, or bullying or just being with the wrong crowd, She also may not be the academic type and school is not suiting her look talk to her about other options.

  • Is she being Bullied or does she have teachers that she doesn’t like or giving her a hard time

  • I hope things have improved

  • Maybe it’s time to explore other options…. Figure out a career path n something to look forward to maybe or work towards

  • talking to her is the best way to find out if anything sinister is happening at school.

  • talk to her and find out what is the cause Is she been bullied?

  • I think it would be best to talk to her and see how she’s feeling, find out whats going on in her life. There could be a number of reasons behind it.

  • I think I lost my way around then.

  • How did you go with this? I’m curious if there was a reason for it, possibly bullying or depression which came out when you talked?

  • I hope all goes well and you get through this
