Hello!

Hi. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to take my daughter skateboarding. She has never learnt and is taking after me (my big brother sort of taught me)…I didn’t want to get her one but she had a voucher from her birthday and desperately wanted one…Any suggestions would be great!

  • Kind of depends where you’re located… most large cities have skate parks now.

  • I hope you found some good ideas – maybe a disused BMX track?

  • how did you go? I hope that if she does, she likes skateboarding

  • My kids learnt by trial & error and watching it on television. You could try the local skate ramp though.

  • take her to the local skate park if you have one

  • Do you have a local skate park?

  • In the school holidays there are usually courses which teach skateboarding in all local areas. These courses are good as they usually include all safety equipment.

  • That’s so cute, hopefully she is working it out by now!

  • there are some good comments here

  • Let her have a go but not without any safety gear, elbow and knee pads, on top of thick jeans and a helmet.
    Plus wrist pads and gloves.
Let her get it out of her system. I did with mine and was just as scared to do so but she was fine.

  • Try and find your local skate park, take her down with all the right safety equipment (helmet, knee and elbow pads) and I’m sure she will either find friends the same age she can learn from or have a chat to other mothers there they may know of a teacher. I often see heaps of little girls at our local part, makes me so happy lol!

  • If you have tiled floors or floor boards in the hall way
That helps, if not I 2nd the inside of garage. Later
on move to the drive way or sidewalk.

  • which area do you live in so we can suggest places near by.

  • I was a skater as a kid and my daughter has had a board since she was 3, she in now almost 4 and doesn’t quite have the co-ordination… but she understands the concept and prefers to use her bike or scooter!

I use the garage – as it is confided area, smooth and flat!

First thing I taught her was balance and how the board pivots – via sitting on the board. Then we got to standing, and holding hand whilst i moved the board.

If you have this all down pat then stopping is a great thing to learn and also how to fall in order to prevent or minimise damage! After she can go up and down the garage you can teach them how to tac (lifting the front of the board up to change directions), find some hills of varying degrees and then set her loose (wrapped in bubble wrap :)).

It is much easier if you skated before and you still have some skills. Once they have leant the basis they are able to go to skate parks to learn the tricks.

  • Make sure she has safety pads to wear for protection. Show her the basics you know in a quiet area. Ring your local council for advice on skate parks etc. where children of her age group can practice safely.
