Hello!

My daughter is 5 months old and sleeps right through most nights. However if she does wake up for a feed during the night I battle to settle her again once she goes back into her cot. She is happy to fall asleep in my arms but as soon as I put her in the cot her she opens her eyes and is wide awake. I have tried everything I can think of. If I leave her to settle on her own she plays for a while and is happy until she wants her dummy (if it has fallen out) and then she gets niggly. This can go on for ages. Some nights it takes over 2 hours to get her back to sleep. As a last resort I put her in bed with me for about half an hour or more and then transfer her back into the cot. Can you give me any advice please? Do you have any advice on settling a 5month old at night?

  • As hard as it is, just prsist with her playing! If you out her in your bed she will just keep doing it until she gets her way. These babies of ours are smarties!

  • How is she sleeping now?

  • how is it going now?

  • How have you gone with settling now?

  • So glad to hear she is a joy and a blessing

  • What did you end up doing?

  • How is she now? :)

  • Any advice below been of any help?

  • She is not getting a bit cold is she.

  • Glad she is a blessing and a pleasure to have

  • Thank you everyone for all the responses. Some good ideas. In answer to some of your questions. She is bottle fed and does self settle on many occasions. Her last feed differs but is usually around 5 or 6pm. Occasionally she will wake up for another feed but most times falls asleep in my arms while I feed her. She could be fast asleep but as soon as she touches gets put back in the cot her eyes flicker open. Her sheets are flannelette so I am assuming it is warm enough for her and she also has plenty of blankets. I try not to talk to her too much during the late night, early morning feed. She seems to be going through stages now though because since writing the letter to MOM her sleeping habits have changed again. She seems to settle so much better now when she goes to bed but later on wiggles around in her cot so much. (most nights totally out of the covers). She usually lands up at the top end of the cot and is extremely restless throughout the night. This morning she was on her tummy. At the moment because of the warmer weather she just has a flannelette fitted sheet and a doubled over flat sheet on the bed. She sleeps in a long sleeve baby romper. I guess I should just leave her to do her thing because she does not really cry or anything. Just lies there blowing raspberries and gurgling away. Ha ha. she is an absolute blessing though and a pleasure to have.

  • I can only say that the best thing for us was to just have our daughter in bed with us. I know it’s not something everyone wants to do, but think how wonderful the comfort and warmth of being in your arms is.

  • I had the same issue, I ended up getting a chair and sitting next to the cot just playing on my phone until she went to sleep, and then slowly weaned her if me being there. I think she just wanted to feel my presence.

  • Try hard to let her self-settle without your help or help from the dummy. It will pay off in the end.

  • if my son wouldn’t settle which I have to admit, was not very often, he is so good at self soothing himself, but I would get him up, put tv on for say 30mins or so, and noise, do my folding up, get stuff done even wash clothes etc, then I would try again and more often then not he would go straight to sleep.
