My almost 4 year old daughter is constantly putting things in her mouth to suck/chew on. She sucks on her hair, clothing, toys and anything else she can find. She had a dummy as a baby but gave it up on her second birthday with no problems at all. Someone recently suggested that I should get her a specially designed rubber type necklace for kids that have an oral fixation to put in their mouth in place of other things but I am wondering if this will create an attachment or encourage her habit?

  • it may be a sensory issue I would chat to your gp about the behaviour etc but also it may just be a faze all kids go through them some are just stranger things then others lol

  • I did the same thing as a child and as a teacher know MANY other children who do the same. Between the ages of 4 and 7, this is perfectly normal. Children become far more aware of the world around them and ‘sucking’ and ‘chewing’ on things is something that can bring them comfort :) you need to make her aware that she shouldn’t do it but don’t get yourself upset over it. It is a part of her development :)

  • My four year old son is the same… most 4 year olds I know are the same, I remind him don’t chew that constantly, take your clothes out of your mouth etc, if it’s something that isn’t going to hurt him or I’m not worried about it getting ruined I let him go, it is a natural phase and it will pass. :)

  • My daughter did the same thing it lasted about 2 yrs eventually after being told constantly to get things out of her mouth she just stopped one day. She is 13 now and is fine.

  • I think unfortunately it’s just going to come down to perseverance and consistency. You just need to take it out every time you see it and reiterate not to do it. Yes it’s gonna get frustrating when you do it 50 times a day lol but it’s a habit you will need to break. Personally I don’t think you should buy her a ‘replacement’ as in the necklace because that is letting her know its ok to put stuff in her mouth :) hope that helps and trust me it’s is trying I’m going thru this with mr 4 lol

  • My 7 yr boy constantly has things in his mouth!!!

  • My daughter is almost 4 too n she’s started doing the same thing this last month. Might just be a stage they go threw?

  • you could ask your health nurse what they recommend as I am sure they would see this a bit.

  • I have a Gumigem, its a necklace that I wear and my twins when I am holding them they suck on it and it doesn’t harm them. Maybe she could wear one so she can suck on that.
It does say though that adults should only wear just in case with long cord – strangulation risk…
Anyways here is the website: http://www.gumigem.com.au
