Hello!

Hi I’m hoping to hear from others mums who have been in the same or similar situations. I have a disk hernia of my l4/l5 for the past almost 2 years.  The pain in my back and legs alleviated a little about 4 months or so ago after I lost a lot if weight from my first child. I am now 9 weeks pregnant with number 2 and am already starting to feel the pain in my back quiet strongly, and legs at night. I don’t have much money to see a physio every week or anything and my husband was worried about this. So I will have to suffer in silence to keep the peace. My son is 2 so lifting is also still an essential part of my daily routine as a stay at home mum. I’m just worried if I’m already in pain what is to come. I have put on 1.5kg already and trying hard to not over gain any weight. I don’t have my family or friends here to turn to. I guess I’m really hoping someone can give me some advice.

  • see your doctor for tips and you might need surgery

  • You can ask at the hospital for tubi grip but otherwise a good back brace can help alleviate some of the pain.

  • Ooh poor you! I would speak to a physio who would be able to teach you exercises and stretches to relieve the pain.

  • sadly it is something you will always suffer, strengthen your core muscles to help as they protect your lower back and discs

  • I found heat packs are wonderful. You can get ones that heat up in the microwave or Libra now also sell hot packs in a pack of 3 that you can stick on to your back where you need the relief the most. Check out your local discount chemist for a full range of heat packs.

  • You poor thing! I had the same thing and it is the worst! I was told to keep a rolled up towel in the small of my back whenever sitting which included driving also. Warm moist heat and gentle massage around the area as the muscles surrounding can spasim causing more pain. You can take panadol but with pain like that it dosent really touch it :( hope all goes well :)

  • The best thing to do is to strengthen the muscles supporting the spine, you should try to see a physio at least once to get some strengthening exercises, I have a similar problem and thankfully walking helped me, 5K a day up until two days before I gave birth

  • i hope its gotten better now

  • it’s terrible – I’ve got l4/l5 and l5/s1. Some pilates exercises can help you to strengthen the muscles. I’ve also been told that in some circumstances if a doctor gives you a referral you can receive physio sessions under medicare which is also worth looking into. I do core strengthening exercises but you need to be careful as it depends on what the injury is up to as to whether or not it is a good idea to exercise in this fashion. Maybe also ask about a TEMS machine.

  • How are you managing with the pain?

  • I hope you found some advice

  • I hope you have some how managed to find the help you need.

  • Although your husband is not keen you would probably benefit from some physical therapy. I hope your husband doesn’t want to see you suffer any more than you need to and will allow you to seek therapy.

  • I hope that you have found tips for relief of your disk hernia pain

  • Heat packs may offer a little bit of comfort.
