Hello!

My 4 month old falls asleep on the breast day and night. I know it’s a “bad habit” but it’s lovely for me and he is so much happier. I can’t stomach the controlled crying to teach him to self settle. Did anyone else have this? If yes did your little one replace the breast with bottle when weaned off milk? Did u have issues with him/her waking at night? And at what stage did they grow out of it? There’s so many opinions and I feel everything that is being taught takes away some of the most precious, enjoyable moments of motherhood. Thanks in advance for your stories.

  • Do not worry about this. It’s not a bad habit, it’s biologically normal.

  • I like all the comments and suggestions here. I think it’s very sweet.

  • All my did this and I loved their warm little bodies against me. I think you should do what works for you and enjoy your baby. Yes its not a good habit but if its what settles your baby and you dont like other forms of settling then do what you feel is right. My kids all grew out if and I would take them of breast when they fell asleep and just cradled them a little to settle before placing in cot.

  • It is very hard to ween, but it is so very nice to see the little one go to sleep so close to you :) My girls never had a bottle, I did it slowly. Replaced breast with a sippy cup, then the boob. Pull away but hold them close till they slept. Then move to the bed and start reading a book before they slept. Lots of bonding :)

  • if you and bubs are happy with this, then you keep doing it. :-)

  • If it works for you and your bub then it’s the way to go!

  • mine does too.. i am really worried about later on

  • there are some good comments here

  • just like what the other lady said only a problem if its a problem with you

  • To be honest, it’s only a problem when it becomes an issue for you! If you’re happy and bubs happy and not in danger then just continue doing what your doing.

  • It is seriously fine, that is what boobs are for, if it works for you and importantly works for baby then let it happen, in 6 months time you will have a happy content baby who feels secure and this sense of security will set them up for self settling more than any tormenting cry yourself to sleep regime.

  • both mine fell asleep on the breast but woke screaming because i couldnt burp them.

  • both of mine fell asleep on the breast. my first would sleep thru when put to bed. and my second would wake but then self settle by grizzling to sleep.

  • All of my 3 girls fell asleep on the breast right up until 12 months of age

  • You know what?….who cares what others think?
If what you are doing is making you and bub happy and neither of you are suffering in anyway then just keep doing what you are doing.
All of my kids fell asleep while feeding and I had no problems giving them bottles later on when they were weaned at over a year old and no issues with them waking and wanting to suckle unless there was a reason such as illness.

You do what you find works for you and dont worry about what others say and think…each child is unique and needs to be treated in a unique way.
