Hello!

I’ve been advised by my doctor and child health nurse that my 4 month old should start to try some purées and eventually mashed foods. Many other mums have said baby led weaning is that way to go. Any opinions or advice?

  • I went puree for my first and tried BLW for my second and didn’t have much luck so ended up on purees. To be honest either method seems fine. Purees obviously takes more organising and work to get meals prepared and baby fed but I didn’t mind. I batch cooked and froze in small portions which worked well for me.

  • I think it can depend on your baby too. My first liked puree food, so she happily ate that until she was past 1. We did give her more blw whole foods gradually by 8 months. My 2nd baby though, hates puree and preferred blw whole foods right from the beginning (6months).
I like puree for foods that baby cant break down properly yet (e.g. meat) because you can just slip in it with veg. But as I said baby 2 hates puree so she gets small cuts of meat and basically sucks it dry before spitting it out.

  • I say start with purée so bub can get use to new foods, and until bub can have a firm grip on foods, let bub try BLW.
And let bub choose which style of feeding bub likes
