Hello!

Our fridge is about 10 years old and although looks good, it needs to be replaced. The base of one of the doors is broken so it won’t shut properly and the water and ice machine no longer works.

Can any one offer suggestions for a new big fridge. We are a family of 6 and in very tight budget.

  • Not Westinghouse, sad cos it’s Australian, but we had to replace our brand new one within weeks. And the replacement stopped working just months later. And beware, a fridge may appear big to look at, but then you open it up and the shelves are half the size

  • Don’t go Westinghouse. We did, cos they’re Australian. Brand new and it broke 5 weeks later, right before Xmas! It was replaced, 6 months later it broke again. They paid us out and we have a fridge that ices up every few months

  • It’s worth subscribing to Choice and see each fridge’s ratings on there. We were going to buy a particular fridge because it looked good and had tons of room but Choice gave it a very poor rating for regulating the temperature. Would never had known that and I’m sure the sales people don’t know or likely wouldn’t tell you that.

  • I LOVE our LG side by side fridge for our family of 5 (including 2 teens and a 5 year old so more like a family of 6+!) It has freezer one side and fridge the other (so much better than our previous 11 year old fridge that was smaller with a tiny freezer on top) It also has a water and ice dispenser (not plumbed) that I would not have thought we’d use so much but is brilliant, and will be even better in Summer.

Check out websites like The Good Guys and Appliances Online etc for specials – they often reduce them a lot when new stock comes in/models are upgraded!

  • We have an old Westinghouse, it has never failed us, so we haven’t needed to upgrade!

  • I always buy Fisher Paykel. Our had a ding too and we saved on the cost. My dad used to repair them and he has always told me to stick with big Fisher Paykel. I think the small ones are made some else and are not as good.

  • We bought our LG stainless steel with ice and water from the Harvey Norman clearance centre. It had a dent, so we saved about $700. We too are a family of 6

  • My parents have a Westinghouse fridge that is still going strong after 10 years ( might even be 15 ) so I am going to say buy this brand as money will stretch further when something lasts well . Having said that they have an old Simpson washing machine that is just as good. They have been lucky with the whitegoods .

  • I like Fisher and PAykel. We have a reverse fridge (the freezer is on the bottom). I find this handy as I don’t use the freezer often so everything in the fridge is eye level or thereabouts.

  • Our fridge is Westinghouse and is still working after 19 years believe it or not!

  • Our fridge is a Fisher & Paykel. We’ve had it for over 10 years and it still works great.
