Hello!

I am about 50ml a day short when expressing for work. Can I use goats/cows milk for 50ml while I build my supply up (bub is 8 months)?

  • I think you are supposed to used formula until a baby is at least 12 months old. There is various brands you can try. If you find your baby seems to be in pain and / or vomiting you may need to swap to a lactose free formula. Goats Milk Formula is the only one I know of. It is fairly hard to find in Supermarkets or Pharmacies. I don’t know if you can use Lactose Free UHT milk if necessary or not. You would need to seek about whether that is an option or not.

  • I would stick with formula top ups, you can buy some in stick packs for easier use with carers

  • The official guideline says to wait till bub is 12 mont. You could either top up with formula, try to up your supply or see if you can get donor milk. Btw, my husband grew up at a farm, was never breastfed and got raw milk straight from the cow from birth onwards !! So up to you if you want to take the guidelines strict :)

  • I would top up with formula. Steer clear of goat and cow milk fir a while longer

  • You would be best to use a formula. Cow & goats milk don’t provide correct balance of nutrients. I would also opt for one with omega 3. As you are not using much – make sure you write an opening date on the can. Once opened it should be used within so many weeks (will be listed on the can). The powder can spoil once opened.

  • No – cow’s milk, goat’s milk etc is not recommended until bub is 12months old or older. Cow’s milk can be added with food ie cereal but not as a drink.
