Hello!

Hi I have a family of 5 with 3 boys. I’m considering buying a camper trailer to go on affordable holidays to the coast etc. I would love people’s thoughts. Also one thing- I’m a bit scared of this as one of my sons has high functioning autism and I’m just a little worried he might wonder off as I can’t lock the tent like I would normally an apartment or cabin?

  • Wonder if you somehow can do a padlock on the two zips coming together (like you have with a suitcase when traveling by air).

  • My daughter and son in law have just bought a second hand camper trailer. They think they are the bees knees now

  • We are a family with three boys as well. They love camping and we have rules which are simple and easy to follow. One of my children has adhd so we gave him an extra. Responsibility – a tracking bracelet, but told him it gave home special powers. The hardest bit I find is getting everyone to sleep!

  • Camper trailer for cheap holidays is a brilliant idea, my sister in law has one and it gets a lot of use. Not sure how to help with autistic son. An autistic boy went missing over Easter earlier this year, very scarey, but apparently his autism helped him to survive the couple of days he was missing….

  • I would try hiring one (or a couple) before buying as they are quite expensive. We are considering one as well for a family of 5, but don’t want to go ahead and then find that it just sits in the driveway. We tried just tent camping this year, but next dry season will hire one out to see how it compares.

  • Can see others have given some really great advice here, where I had no first hand knowledge to share with you. That’s why I love this site as there is always someone willing to help out.

  • You could use travel door alarms.

  • We have a camper trailer (off road) and we love it. Don’t get it use it as much as we’d like but great for just getting away

  • How did you get on Kylie, have you bought one yet?

  • We are a family of 6 and love our mdc camp trailer ,I am sure you could rig up something to alert you if your son was trying to get out of the tent

  • when selecting one look (and try in show room) at how easy it is to assemble as you don’t want to spend hours getting it set up or packing it away. look for quick and easy ones and lots of good storage compartments and water proofing so if something leaks it does not ruin everything else like all the bedding etc.

  • A friend of mine who HATES camping recently bought a camping trailer – she now thinks it’s the best thing, and the whole family is loving camping trips. Regarding your son, maybe you can rig up a movement alarm that will tell you if he unzips the tent.

  • I think you & your family are going to have great holidays whichever option you choose. I think the comments of hiring are a good idea.

  • maybe hire and see how it goes first

  • Yeah I agree maybe hire one first and see how that goes good luck.
