Hello!

Any MoMs know if there is a natural remedy for a dry itchy scalp? Since getting the Mirena IUD my hair has become really oily and then really itchy. I’ve used head and shoulders and other anti dandruff shampoos but nothing seems to help. I’ve also used a deep cleanish g shampoo but that too hasn’t helped with oiliness. Any advice would be great. Thanks

  • Although they may not work for everyone, the following are some potential home remedies that may have some merit when it comes to treating a dry scalp.

Coconut oil. Share on Pinterest Coconut oil may be effective at moisturizing the skin. …
    Tea tree oil. …
    Aloe vera. …
    Olive oil. …
    Witch hazel. …
    Mashed bananas. …
    Avocado oil. …
    Jojoba oil.

  • I would try tea tree shampoo which you can buy from either Coles or Woolies and it’s not very expensive.

  • I’ve had the same issue since getting the Mirena!

  • I don’t understand how you can have an oily & itchy head? Perhaps the shampoo is too harsh & your scalp is reacting to it. My hair gets very itchy if my scalp gets too dry. Go to a hairdresser & get a recommendation for a good shampoo & conditioner

  • I’ve heard of washing your hair in vinegar but I wouldn’t recommend as you’ll smell like a fish and chip shop. Try a fortifying shampoo like the Natural Look brand, affordable and might work.

  • Just try a little warmed oil, what ever you have i the cupboard not buring hot just a little warmed in the microwave, then wrap in cling wrap from the cupboard for about 15 mins and rinse in the shower and wash with shampoo an conditioner as normal… All going well it shoud reduce the itching usless there are knits involved then it might take some thing from the chemist to relive… ( my kds kinder and school have had a plague of this recently and we have been lucky so far the kids havent got it yet). I once got them from y son and it wasnt nic to get rid of….

  • My friend had success with tea tree oil. I’ve had itchy scalp problems in the past and found the Aldi anti dandruff shampoo was the only thing that worked. I still use it, and when I run out and use something else the itchiness returns right away.

  • Try Selsun gold in the yellow pack as it works on my husband.

  • Moo Goo scalp cream is great!

  • Coconut oil. It’s also a great hair treatment!

  • Hi, I’m confused that you say your scalp is dry (flaky skin?) but your hair is oily. It must make it hard to know whether to get shampoos for oily or dry hair. Maybe try both if you haven’t already. (Since having children whenever I get itchy scalp I do the “conditioner lice treatment test” on myself, smother with conditioner and check for any nasties!).

  • If the other suggestions offered don’t help, perhaps you could try tea tree shampoo (from the supermarket). It may help.

  • Gosh since getting the Mirena all thats happened to me is i have gained weight(10kg). next time you go to the hair dresser for a trim ask them and see what wisdom they can come up with.. Sometimes they sell thing that might be suitable for the condition you are describing… Or next time you are at a chemist have a chat to the chemist on duty they might be able to provie you with something that might help..

  • I use Klorane Shampoo that has nettle oil in it. Read the box carefully because at a quick glance they all look the same. I got it at The Chemist Warehouse. I have seen it at Priceline. Not all pharmacies stock it.
