  • Have you as a Mum been able to access occupational therapy and other training to learn skills in coping with this???. I know a Mum who is doing that and it is helping her a lot. Some words you don’t use any more. Surprisingly one of them is “but”. When you say but the “expression” of following words the tone of your voice changes. I know of 2 children – one it is one of the worst cases that have been assessed. The child has gone ahead reasonably quickly since they started taking him to various therapy sessions. People of all ages with Autism can be quite violent and can’t control themselves. In such cases you may need to stand behind your child and firmly hold arms down to the side and make sure you aren’t kicked. If you stand in front you may also be head butted or kneed, It is extremely difficult and exhausting to cope with. They often don’t seem to know how strong they are. Sometimes they later realise what they have done and get upset about it then too. A person often excels in some skills and is ahead of others. They tend to get bored easily for that reason. The frustration is what causes some of the emotional and behavioural issues. Sometimes parents have to change their parenting skills which is not easy. It can be even more difficult if you have other children as they tend to copy the problems.

  • This is a great place to start. I am a teacher and come across many children with Autism. It is a tough road but with support you will be fine! Also ask your local doctor for any groups that may be run in your local area
