Hello!

Hi. I’m 4 months pregnant with my first bub and I was wondering what items other mums suggest I should buy before the baby arrives. I have a list of all the stock-standard items but was wondering what are things other mums wished they had purchased in advance. Thanks.

  • I too wished i had got a rocking chair as i didn’t get one until bub was 6 months and from then on it made it so much easier to get him to sleep while i breastfed him. He also got the idea that it was bed time when we sat in the chair for his night feed so it helped him get into a routine :)

  • Nappies and wipes I didn’t want to leave the house for the first six weeks as bubba isn’t protected against sickness. I stocked up on toilet paper and made food and froze it. A bouncer and swing is awesome.

  • I will be a first time mum soon so this is interesting advice.
    Thanks for the tips.

  • I found it was best to buy whatever I wanted, trial and error. It’s about what works for you and what you like.

  • Loads of wipes. They never go astray. Loads of ZIP onesies, spew rags (cloth nappies) and don’t go overboard on toys. Lots of socks also.

  • a swing or somewhere to secure baby when you are having a shower etc. Not necessary from birth but you will want it as soon as they start to roll.

  • You usaully get lots of clothes as presents for your 1st bub, but buy something special for the 1st day home outfit. Baby wipes you will go through them. I also brought nappies to have on hand. Usually the bigger sizes not the newborn they grow out of them very quick.
A good baby thermomter is always handy & just in case have some baby panodol or nurofen on hand. Bonjella for when bub starts teething.

  • a baby carrier or wrap . bubs most likely will wanna be close or held by you ALL THE TIME. this way you can be hands free and be able to do things like eat and drink , and rest your arms, babies look small but after holding for 5 hours while they sleep they get heavy

  • This forum is awesome :) i have been looking for what to buy online and it says say much unnessary things so I’m glad I’ve found this website so much great advice :)

  • A Pram and a cot. A blanket, 2 sets of cot sheets, 3 face washes, 2 love to dream swaddles (don’t bother with wraps) 5 singlets, 2 jumpsuits, a bath tub, a bath towel, nappies, nappy wipes and either nappy bags or a nappy disposal unit, a baby travel bag, feeding pillow, express pump and milk storage bags. Download an app on you phone to monitor feeds, diaper changes, sleeps etc. I use baby connect. Also download and app called “The wonder weeks”. Cotton balls, a nappy change table or mat. Nappy rash cream, thermometer (scanner that scans the room temp and bath water too), baby panadol and flo just incase. If you have a baby shower have it at least two months before your due to prevent double ups.

  • bulk up on baby wipes i use them for everything :)

  • just the big stuff like cot and pram :-) dont buy clothes. they will.give so much on baby shower

  • I bought way too much because I bought everything I thought I had to have then found I didn’t use half of it. Cot and pram are essentials. As are nappies and wipes (stock up you need heaps). Other than that have a look at what each product does and think about whether it will work for you. Also various brands of the same thing have very different functions and features so compare them all.

  • I agree with a rocking chair — best investment ever! We were lucky and got a great one from eBay, soft leather with ottoman for only $90. I personally don’t have a problem with that so if you don’t mind second-hand then I’d look there!

  • This is a great time to start laybuys all the larger items. Doing it this way you can get the cots, highchairs, car seats when you see them out on sales. Saving heaps. Buy an item of clothing, blankets etc each week. You will see the clothing build up. Neutral colours to start off. This way too you will know to tick off your list of what you need depending on the weather when your baby is born. Good luck.
