Hello!

Is handwashing dishes really that bad? I’m always arguing with my Mum about the fact that she should get herself a dishwasher. She thinks she can get it just as clean by hand. Is she right or wrong?

  • It probably depends on how she washes her dishes. She can probably get it clean enough for safety.

  • I still hand wash. We are on tank water so I think it’s better water wise to hand wash. I’m probably wrong, but that’s my thoughts

  • I always hand wash because it’s quicker and I think it’s better.

  • I always hand wash my dishes with good hot water and a good soap. I think it cleans the dishes very well and like the feel of the hot soapy water on my hands. Both my husband and me don’t mind doing the dishes, it can have a kind of therapeutic effect. Btw we do have a dishwasher, but never use it.

  • I hand wash my dishes and allow to airdry. As long as the water is hot and has the right detergent I think dishes end up much cleaner. With a dishwasher you still kind of need to wash them prior to loading. I also don’t like seeing cuttlery with hand / finger smudges on them which tend to stay there if in a dishwasher (If I had a dishwasher however, I would certainly use it for most things)

  • I have been the dishwasher all my life. I only have a small family so never had a need for one . I don’t think its whether its cleaner for one or the other, its whether you think it is convenient/ needed for you and if you will use it .

  • Hand washing in hot water with Morning Fresh is my way and it works great!

  • No,it will never go out of fashion, nothing like clean dishes & a clean kitchen.

  • Very interesting comments read on this! Thanks

  • Hand washing has been around for years. Hot soapy water,Meade to air dry and I see no problems. Heaps easier than a dishwasher I think

  • We don’t have a dishwasher in our house.
I’ve compared my hand washing with dish washers and hand washing is much better.
You can see that they’re washed, feel it and with a thorough rise, they’re perfect.

  • The water needs to be hot. I don’t quite understand the question. Is it really bad for what – hands?

  • It depends what you put in the dishwasher and how you stack it. It depends how thoroughly you wash the dishes by hand. I think that dishwashers are excellent for glasses and really greasy items like the George Foreman fat trap.

  • I hand wash my dishes, we don’t have a dishwasher. I think I can hand wash them cleaner than the dishwasher.

  • Hand washing is fine if you have the time but I love my dishwasher.
