Hello!

My husband and I have had 7 attempts at IVF and now our only option is adopting but reading all the information on FACs and Barnardos it’s a little overwhelming and a scary process and just wanted to get feedback from anyone that might have done this to give a heads up on what to actually expect

  • Wonder how you’re going and if you decided yet ?

  • I haven’t but a sibling has adopted overseas and they do have their issues, it is not all roses, though it is not all bad. They have grown into beautiful children now who love their parents and vice versus. They are a very caring family and have given up a lot for their kids but wouldn’t want it any other way.

  • I hope you have managed to make so contacts and to get some support and help.

  • Good luck – no doubt it’s an intense process but worth it in the end.

  • I haven’t but all the fear will be so rewarding in the end. I wish you luck

  • Maybe find a local support group as it may helpful to talk to someone that has gone through or is going through the adoption process. It may help to alleviate the scary feeling and also give you practical support.

  • My friend and her husband had nine attempts at IVF before turning to adoption. They adopted two baby girls from overseas, who are now both in their early twenties. They are a beautiful family.

  • Don’t be put off by all the forms and red tape, it’ll be worth it when you finally have a child to love.

  • Hi there, Sorry to hear you didn’t have any luck with IVF. We are in currently in the process of adopting also through Barnardos. it is a a lengthy process (we were advised 18 months roughly) but also depends on the age of child and the aspects you are prepared to accept so could easily be alot quicker than this.
There is a mountain of paperwork at the beginning and you have to be 100% open and honest and be prepared to share every aspect of your life, your current children if you have any, your finances, your family, why you want to adopt, etc etc. Once all this is provided Barnardos go through it again and then fingers crossed you get approved.
Then begins the interview process (which we are currently waiting on) which is approx six 3 hour in dept interviews and you must be prepared to do a 3 day course. Once this is done you are in the pool to be matched with a child.
It seems a little daunting but they need to ensure that they have the right adults for the kids. Good luck with your decision and the process if you choose to go through it.

  • We have 2 foster kids in permanent care under a guardianship order, from which the step to adoption is relatively easy to make. We deliberately choose not for adoption, as under a guardianship order you still get 2weekly payments and under adoption you don’t. We have 2 girls with a disability and a disorder and need the funding. Under a guardianship order there is just the financial support, no support from caseworkers and so on, so you get to make the parental decisions yourself. We foster for Facs NSW and our girls are via Docs Victoria.
