Hello!

Has anyone else had experience with febrile convulsions? My son is just over 2 and last week had his 3rd febrile convulsion. The doctor would like to refer him to a neurologist? It’s very scary when it happens but the last 2 times I’ve been told they are harmless?

  • My son had more than 6 of them… they stop by the time he was 2 1/2.

  • I see your post was submitted some time ago, I am wondering how things are going? Generally speaking it is important to find out the cause of the febrile convulsions so you know how to stop the recurrence. I understand it is more common in children under the age of 2. The standard hospital treatment is to administer fluids and perhaps Paracetamol and of course testing to find the cause. However Paracetamol takes 1/2hr to work so is useless at the time of the convulsion but it may assist to bring the fever down over the course of the following few hours. I hope your child never experiences this again as it can be extremely distressing for both of you.

  • Hope you have had this checked out and have found the cause!

  • febrile convulsions are not harmless at all, they are very dangerous and can cause brain damage and even death. Febrile means fever or temperature and means something is wrong

  • Hope everything is okay – did you see the neurologist?

  • I would follow the doctors advice

  • i hope it all goes well for you and your family!

  • Hope you found the answer you were looking for.

  • I haven’t experienced it but I hope you find the answers your looking for

  • How are you going with it now?

  • Really sorry I don’t have advise but good luck with finding it

  • When I worked my first shift in the pediatric section of an emergency department, one of the children I looked after had a febrile convulsion. It wasn’t his first. They need to be treated the same as seizure. Make sure they are safe and can’t hurt themselves. Time the convulsion. The convulsions are due to the body temperature rising due to an infection. They say if the convulsion lasts longer than 5 minutes to present to an emergency department to find out the underlying infection causing it. It is scarey to witness but just remain calm.

  • Mum told me my brother had these when he was little, he had one in one of those blue square wading pools once and mum said it was so scary.

  • I hope you find the answers you are looking for and all goes well for your little boy x

  • That sounds really scary, I’m sorry I don’t have any advice :(
