Hello!

Has anyone renovated an old caravan? Would love your tips, particularly in making sure any mould is removed and gone forever!

  • From the answers it sounds like it can be a lot of work but well worth it.

  • My mother in law did. Oh what a job! I don’t think she would’ve started if she knew what was involved. Unfortunately, it was stolen before she got to finish it, by her daughter of all people, so I can’t help you much

  • It makes me inspired reading these comments, a great idea!

  • Thanks mom94125 – very inspiring and helpful answer too. :)

  • yes! we did one! it was a old caravan and we knocked out a few walls to open it all up, put in a shelving system that we liked and pulled out all the yuck old carpet. Replace the cushion of the bench seat, repainted it. Fixed a broken window hinge and glass. It was sold easily then. You can put in as much effort as you like and basic carpentary comes in handy. Tafe might run a simple handyman course in your area. My hubby did most of this reno but i helped. We were going to use it to travel but then had a baby lol. The chasis and everything was fine and it was all roadworthy so it was just the visual appeal that we fixed really. Oh also put in a new air-con.

  • Good advice to check out vans – will do this weekend!

  • Thanks for the comments and tips Hanny n Dave – good ideas. :)

  • Hubby rebuilt a 34 footer years ago in Darwin, what a huge mess for 2 years, but in the end it was like better than new. Cleaning mould wise, it is the same your home now. Renovating wise, unless you are a very handy with wood, trim, finishes etc and tools, don’t do it. It is 10 timse harder than renovating your home as the technicials and materials are very different. Go to a few caravan parks, find a few older looking vans or mobile homes/buses etc, and ask the owners. They most likely have done their own renos and bus building, so they will be able to and be more willing to show you. We are still planning a bus reno to mobile home, and have already started talking tho the experts in this field. The ones who are living the dream that have already done the work.
