Hello!

I want to keep a much loved chair and it needs to be reupholstered. Has anyone reupholstered a chair? I would appreciate your experiences and tips.

  • Did you have a go at reupholstering?

  • I’ve just reupholstered our six dining room chairs. It was quite easy with very little tools. I watched Youtube videos on how to do it and took a chance and it worked out.

  • No but I’ve seen it done – looks do- able?

  • I am currently looking at reupholstering my dining room chairs so I would love to hear how your experience goes.
Wishing you the best of luck!

  • My neighbour does this sort of stuff, she’s really good. I would suggest, if the chair means a lot to you and you plan on doing it yourself, do a few practice ones to see how you go. You don’t want to make a mess of your favourite treasured chair after all

  • I have….once! It was very difficult and time consuming. I spent most of my time fixing up mistakes :/ It could probably get easier with more experience, but I don’t have the patience :/

  • I agree maybe checking out youtube might give you tips & ideas on how it’s done, great idea!

  • Thanks for all of the tips and advice – looking forward to tackling this project and creating my own chair! :)

  • i would just get someone to do it, save me the hassle, but you can try if you like and if you are not happy, get someone to fix. they look good once finished and the chair gets a new lease on life

  • Thanks for the tips Mom’s members – looking forward to this project.

  • I have reupholstered chairs by taking each seam apart, marking each piece for its position on the chair and then cutting the new material using the old pieces as a pattern Then join as previously and attach new pieces of fabric to the chair the same way the originals were making sure each piece is pulled tight. Good luck

  • sorry no advice just following as i love my rocking chair that needs doing also.

  • Hubby refuses to pay anyone for anything unless he has had at least 2 goes at it. Fortunately many show cars later and a home reno means he is a jack of all trades. I had a family heirloom dresser stool from my mum in Indonesia, which after a few decades needed a complete rebuild. He took photos, marked every part discretely, took note of dis-assembly tricks to aid reassembly, and then returned it to as new with stained timber and taut smooth upholstery. Take your time and ask the experts on tricks with wood joints and fabric stretch depending on your particular item.Good luck.

  • I got 2 chairs upholstered and have to say they looked great BUT never seemed to go back together quite right as they were slightly rickety. Good luck.

  • I never have reupholstered a chair before but maybe checking out youtube might give you tips & ideas on how it’s done.
