Hello!

My 7 month old is having a hard time falling asleep for longer than 20 minutes during the day. A slight noise will startle her and she can’t fall into deep sleep. Any tips from mums on how to encourage her to sleep longer?
Her day time naps are affecting her night sleep and in the last few nights she has started to constantly wake up. Is it a phase and I just have to ride it out. Any suggestions?

  • I think this is an age of great change, bub will battle for a while to find her rhythm, you unfortunately just have to go with it. my daughter has a definite sleep wake cycle that we have to simply get through every day and night, she will always wake after 45 min and then go back to sleep, the quicker i worked that out the better it was!

  • Would using some background noise help? Maybe a cd or radio playing to help so she may get accustomed to it and not react so much to other noises?

  • i hope it does get better for you :( my daughter is 1 yo and she is still waking lots a night… :(

  • I think its just a stage thing

  • They do go through stages so try to ride it out. Try having background noise (a gentle cd or something similar) while she sleeps during the day so it’s not dead quiet, that way she might not wake with the slightest of noise.

  • Omg. This is exactly what my 7 1/2 month old is doing. His sleeping has gone all over the place the last 2 weeks. Went from self settling and sleeping thru the night to finding it difficult to fall asleep and waking every hour. I have read at this stage they do go thru sleep changes and their bodies are going thru a lot physically with learning to crawl and teeth. I’ve been told just to persist with the routine and eventually it will pass. Easier said than done when your up all night. Hope it gets better for you soon

  • It’s hard when this happens. Hopefully it’s just a stage. Talk to the baby nurse if you are concerned.

  • Consider putting your little one in a good routine and sticking to it.

  • My son is 6 and still gets out of bed at 5:30am. It’s probably not what you want to hear, but some kids are just hardwired to get up early. I REALLY hope that your little angel is not one of them and that it’s just a (quick) phase.

  • Most likely a phase but it could be teething too. goodluck just when we think we know their routine they change.

  • Way back when I had my daughter the nurses would place fussy babies next to the frig, apparently the constant hum of the motor was soothing and help them sleep. But my pick is buy a relaxation type cd .A warm bath followed by a gentle massage before bed is also extremely helpful.

  • My daughter was the same, but also a bad night time sleeper. It was really difficult, but she was just a light sleeper and still is. I didn’t really find a solution. Good luck.

  • The best advice my Gran gave me was to ‘start as you mean to go on’….right from day one i made sure that there was noise in the house with all my kids. I would have music playing….one of those relaxation cds with music and waves crashing or jungle sounds, etc…..I had 4 different cds so they didnt drive me crazy and I would pop them on during the day when my littleones went to sleep. that constant level of noise helped to wash out anything else like the phone going or someone knocking on the door, etc

  • I have had all my kids in a normal noise filled house and there was no quite in our house and my kids will sleep through anything but they come home from hospital to this and yes kids do at times do what I call the 5 second power nap as they hear something and think they are missing something my daughter had this problem and I told her life is not on sneaking around quiet, make noise pump the hi fi get him use to it all. He also does the 5 second power naps and he can go for ages on that 5 second power up.

  • Ensure that she is really exhausted when you put her down for a sleep & she has a full stomach. Close the door a little to her bedroom & have a radio playing in the background. Try not to go into her straight away when she wakes up & see whether she will put herself back to sleep. perseverance is key! Good Luck
