Hello!

I have a shower caddy for shampoo, conditioner, soap etc,but keep having to buy new ones only after a few months as they go rusty. Is there a way to stop this and save money

  • Wipe them dry after each shower – not sure it will solve the problem completely, but it should take longer for rust to take hold.

  • I agree, even stainless steel caddies rust. I suggest you to use wooden shower caddy. Take a look at https://www.labourmatters.com/how-to-keep-a-shower-caddy-from-rusting/.

  • Every shower caddy that I have had has rusted, even when purchasing “stainless steel”. Probably only way to avoid this completely is to use plastic!

  • Have you heard of DampRid ? These are crystals which absorb moisture out of the air.
It might help with your problem.
Place a container with some of these crystals in area’s of the house where it is damp (you will be amazed how many area’s are damp !).
You can buy them at the Dollar stores, Coles, Woolies, Bunnings, etc.

  • You can get plastic shelves that fit into the corner of your shower with suction caps and are not expensive. Might be an option?

  • I clean the rust of mine with steel wool and ajax.

  • We have a heavy duty plastic one and we haven’t changed it for well over 18months now, we love it!

  • That will never happen because people would not buy another one if it never rusts. Even though it says stainless steel sooner or later it will go rusty over time . I have replaced so many times and all of them says stainless steel/chrome etc..

  • A higher quality plastic shouldn’t do this, but when your shower caddy is from lower quality or made of stainless steal it’s most likely to happen. You can’t really avoid it as it’s always damp and moist in the bathroom.

  • Maybe change the type of caddy? There may be an option that will not do this – best of luck.

  • It is impossible to stop it rusting once the plastic coating wears off – mine took a very long time before it wore off though. You can always buy a solid plastic one from the supermarket, Bunnings etc and you will never have that problem

  • I have the same issue

  • I hate how they do that! Great question!

  • Purchase some cheap clear nail polish and coat the new caddies with a really good coat.
Clear nail polish on the bottom of cans/tins eg deodorant that is keep on top of vanities etc will prevent them from rusting and staining the vanity top.
    BEST OF LUCK.

  • Perhaps you can get a stainless steel caddy? or if you are really handy look at taking off a tile and installing a ceramic shelf/insert (then all you have to worry about is getting off the soap scum etc.!). Some shower gels/shampoos are tubes with hooks on the lid that you can hang directly off taps without any caddy at all.
