My 4 year old wants to go to big school now. Her preschool says she isn’t really ready yet, I want to keep her back another year as well. How can I help her keep making the easy transition from home to preschool. At preschool she is hardly talking, very quiet when she does. Doesn’t ask people or tell people no if she doesn’t like what they are doing. She is really clever with letters at home, knows her name and can write it and yet at preschool she isn’t saying letters, acting like she can’t write her name or even spell it out. She writes it on any bit of paper she can find. Even when I’m asleep she can write her name on her own. I’m not sure what to say or do to explain that she needs to do what she does at home at preschool or she can’t go to big school for another year or 2. Thanks in advance.

  • With this, maybe if you stay with her at preschool for a little bit and try and get her to write… I know with my son when he started prep last year, we would count to 100 and say the alphabet ect.. together and spell out words randomly, and we still do it, he is now in year 1… Really helped him become more confident =)

  • hi , your lovely daughter might be shy from different people . my daughter was like that it took her a long time for her to get to know them . i hope that helps

  • Im really interested in finding out what happened with your little one. I hope it all went well, and she has/is making the transition easily. x

  • there are some good comments here

  • You are the one that knows best.

  • Hope you found a way to explain it to her,

  • what did you end up doing?

  • I’d have a talk and see if she doesn’t like the school. Ask her if she would like to try another one and get a discussion happening where you can ask her why she doesn’t want to say her letters and write her name when she is at school.

  • What did you decide to do?

  • What did you end up doing?

  • I think she sounds like she is on the way to being ready.

  • Good luck with making the decision. You have to do what is right for her,

  • A difficult decision to make best of Luck

  • I had a child like this and I changed her schools as it help so much. She is now 15 and still quiet but talks as has a goo group of friends she is also a straight a student. Her first school was jut too small I found a medium school worked best for her

  • Sounds like she could be really shy.. Maybe next time she tells you she wants to go to big school, try and explain to her that her teachers need to see that she can do the things that she does at home (saying letters, writing her name, etc.) explain it in a way she’ll understand.
