Hello!

My 14 year old is struggling at high school, it’s really starting to be a problem. Their homework is on their ipad so it’s hard to help her. I’ve contacted the school but they say she needs to try more. I asked her what’s the problem and she says it’s hard for her to understand the work. Does anyone have any ideas please?

  • She’s been assessed. Fingers crossed you are now receiving the help you think your daughter needs

  • Great to hear this problem has progressed. Would love to hear if it’s been solved or not

  • I’ve contacted the school & she’s getting accesssed ,hope we can get help

  • Do you have access to a tutor? They cost a bit, unless you can get a teacher to help, but are well worth it

  • When I wad on high school, I couldn’t understand maths and I got a tutor who broke it down for me
I was able understand the problem and everything
    :)
Perhaps writing everything down on paper instead of the ipad, would make it easier

  • is is possible to see her teachers to let them know that she doesn’t understand the work or maybe get a tutor that can help her understand

  • yeah kids just get bored! give her an incentive for studying! in the school holidays will be the time that her “hard work” can pay off. Money is always a great reward but i know that you have to keep the budget in mind. So maybe 5-10 dollars a week, you can put that away easily and then she gets access to it after school report cards get back etc. You can figure something out that works for you

  • I struggled at school. Maths was the hardest for me. Unless i had an example for me to refer to i just didn’t get it and it just wouldn’t stay in my head unfortunately.
Ask her what parts is she struggling in and see if you can get a tutor for her.

  • If she’s not understanding the work could it be she is dyslexic

  • As the others have said firstly start with an eye test as you might get some answers there.
Could a tutor help? Have a one and one session to help her go over the work she is having trouble understanding? Is it just one subject?

  • Tested her eyes ,now finally she on waiting list to be tested ,but probably won’t happen till 4 th term .apreciate ur help .

  • I dont think saying she just needs to try more from the school is a good enough answer. She might be stuggling and need help,. Could it be she needs her eyes tested? Maybe its not so much she doesnt understand it may be she is having issues reading it. I would also ask the school what do they mean by needs to try more and if they have noticed areas she stuggles in?? Maybe you could even try to motivate her buy offering her a tutor in the subjects she has issues. Sometimes some kids just need to have their work explained to them in easy steps and simple terms. If your daughter is having issues understanding the work there maybe more kids that are finding it hard as well.
