I do love to drink coffee and drink several cups a day. How much coffee do other mums drink? Is there a negative side to drinking coffee? I have not noticed any side effects.

  • I don’t drink coffee or tea at all and am definitely in the minority

  • I drink about 5 or 6 cups a day. I don’t take sugar and try to make it very weak.

  • I DONT DRINK COFFEE at all but I would love to. I have never liked the taste of it but love the aroma of roasted coffee beans.

  • I drink about 3 cups a day

  • There are side effects to having too much caffeine, you don’t usually notice until you stop drinking it though. I used to have a few cups a day, got pregnant and couldn’t touch it for years after. Now I can drink it again, but only a cup here and there

  • Too much caffeine (contained in coffee) can cause heart palpitations. You can hear and feel your heart beating. I know a lady who was taken to hospital by ambulance as they didn’t know the cause

  • None. I have to add so much sugar to coffee to overcome the bitter flavour, I have given up.

  • My blood pressure can be high and it can affect that, but I can’t have less than 2 cups a day – crazy because I went many years without drinking it at all and now I’m addicted :/

  • I normally have about 2 – 3 cups of instant each day. If I buy a ‘proper’ coffee out, that might be my only coffee for the day. I will also have at least one cup of caffeinated tea a day as well.

The big thing with coffee is that it is a diuretic and will make you go to the toilet more frequently. You should drink more water (in addition to the coffee) so you don’t get dehydrated. I’m not really sure of any other negative side effects. I think if you don’t overdo it, you should be fine.

  • I’m a little biased regarding coffee and will say if you are enjoying every one that you have well keep enjoying but if it’s having a coffee for the sake of having a coffee maybe mix it up with other hot drink alternatives. It would also depend on the type/strength of coffee you have to how much caffeine you are putting in your system :-) I myself am an espresso only coffee drinker and at the peak of of my consumption was having up to 8 shots a day now I’m not sure if it’s an age or health thing but I have dropped down to max 2 a day, even had a period there of four months with out one. But while I still enjoy its aroma and taste I’ll have whatever amount I want when it grabs me.

  • General recommendations are for up to three cups. There can be side effects from too much such as headaches, feeling jittery. Drip coffee is also stronger than having a milky latte so how many depends on what type of coffee.

  • Hi there, I wrote a blog post on giving up coffee. It was brutal but I knew I had to do it as I was getting heart palpitations and the shakes (but I drank a lot). I had headaches and a lot of anxiety after going cold turkey. But I powered through.
Now, I have found if I have one day on and one day off, I can keep the addiction at bay. And in the off days I drink decaf as I love the ritual of coffee (and I miss it). Here is my blog post :-)

  • depends who you ask – I was told 2 a day was ok but I drink about 4 – doesn’t seem to harm me.

  • some people find the caffeine effects them. others are ok.

  • I used to drink about 8+ cups a day! I now drink 2 maybe 3…some days none!
I have found when I stopped drinking it so much for about 2 days I had severe headaches. I have also found that if I do drink more than 3 cups now, I have diarrhoea like symptoms.
