Hello!

My 3 1/2 month old formula fed baby doesn’t drink the recommend amount of formula. As per tin directions it saids 210mls 5 times a day, however he is having 120-150mls 5 times a day. I’m booked in to see my health care nurse but not for 2 weeks. Just wondering if I should be worried or is there something I can add etc. How much formula should my baby have?

  • I noticed this was posted back in 2012. Hope all is well.

  • All bubs are different and eat and grow at their own rate. And rest assured your baby won’t starve itself

  • DO NOT ADD FAREX TO YOUR BABIES BOTTLE… It’s dangerous!

All babies are different. Go to regular checks with your Child health nurse to make sure Bub is not losing weight. If he is he may either need to try a different formula that is designed for weight gain or start solids – listen to their advice!

If Bub is happy and has wet nappies and regular bowel movements then it’s not alarming. Get him weighed express your concerns and go from there. There is only 1kg difference between some weight percentiles my daughter was in the 50th then dropped to the 15th as my BM did not contain enough fat. To look at her all chubby cheeks and dolly polly arms you would never have thought that she had not gained the correct amount of weight. So go along get Bub weighed

  • As long as baby is having regular wet nappies, seems happy and isn’t obviously losing weight then it should be ok. If in doubt, there are advice lines you could call to double check

  • A lot of mothers add farex to they’re baby’s milk. It will help with getting more sustinence in bubs system. Good luck with it

  • As long as baby is drinking regularly and is happy I would not be too worried. Everybody is different and some people just don’t want to eat as much as others.

Maybe offer the smaller amounts more often.

  • I have always just used what is on the tin as a guide. So long as bub is putting on weight you’ll be fin.

  • I would speak to your child health nurse

  • I would have taken him down to a chemist a few days in a row just to have him weighed there and if he is putting on weight then great, but if he is loosing then he needs more formula.

  • Did you end up finding how much formula your baby needs?

  • Ask your midwife they should be able to tell you

  • If you’re worried talk to your child health nurse. Hope all is going well for you

  • I’d say as long as bub is gaining weight, and is happy and healthy, you don’t have anything to worry about. Some people eat less than others, and babies are no exception.

  • Health care nurse should be able to help you out

  • Additives aren’t necessary try karicare formula :D
