Hello!

We’ve just relocated our family and our 8 year old starts her new school next week. I’m so anxious for her even though I know she will find her place but do you have any suggestions on how I can make the transition smoother / help ease any nerves starting a new school?

  • My daughter started a new school at the same age. I wasn’t too worried as I knew the teacher would assign a class buddy. She settled in quite quickly.

  • I’d suggest sending around an email through the class contact list introducing yourself and your child. You can say you’d love people to come up and say hi to you, and take it from there. Once your child has some contacts, maybe ask them to a park for a playdate or something.

  • Most kids that age group are quite welcoming to new people, Maybe suggest for her to go up to a different person in her class each day and ask if she can join them at lunch time.. It will not take her long to find a friend.. Kids can read other kids quite well and i am sure within a couple of days she will find her new friends…

  • Sounds like it’s you who needs the help transitioning. Maybe if she could meet some of the kids in the neighbourhood? It usually helps if there are familiar faces around. Try not to worry too much, kids are very resilient, I think she’ll do fine
