Hello!

I’ve long had a problem with the hideous aroma that seems to linger around cat litter trays, even when there’s not a piece of cat poop in sight. I gag at the thought of it, never mind actually getting a “nose-full” of it. Even cleaning the tray out daily, the odour is present. I read somewhere that adding baking soda to the litter in the tray will diffuse or absorb the smell. Has anyone tried this, and if so, did it work? If not, what hints can people give me to deal with this problem, as we have an “inside” cat who uses the tray, so putting it outside is not an option. My sinuses can’t stand the smell much longer.

  • Yes try to add baking soda to the litter and clean the tray with eucalyptus oil.

  • I use air fresher and wash the tray every time it gets smelly!

  • Have you tried bicarb soda – it absorbs most smells or spray a solution of white vinegar and water

  • Oops should read maybe some melts…..

  • Hope you have managed to find something to assist you with eliminating the nasty odour. Maybe some using an electric melt burner with some vanilla melts may help with the house smelling sweeter!

  • I know that Bicarbonate of Soda is a good odour eliminator. When you can, get some fresh air into and through your house. Nil odour has worked for me with other stinky smells. Maybe try some Tea Tree Oil too?

  • Certain litters are more absorbent than others; maybe try a new one? maybe look at odour eliminators too? possibly talk to your vet? Good Luck!

  • you can buy the litter that helps trap in the smell

  • bi carb takes away most smells just sprinkle a bit into the tray and mix into the kitti litter

  • We do a mix of baking soda and a few drops of lavender oil

  • also try some nil odour it could help

  • pet shops can recommend something as well

  • I’d ask at your local pet store as I am sure I have seen something to help the odour problem

  • I would buy a new tray and then buy Kmart cat litter that is crystal and around $6 and stops the smell if changed regularly

  • I have 2 trays in the laundry and yes, they can smell ‘high’ when I go to check them the morning after the night before.
Luckily there is a loo in the laundry and I scoop out the bits that have clumped and the poo as well to flush away.
I have a bottle of Nilodor, which is fantastic for sprinkling on the kitty litter. I also have a container of cheap talc from the supermarket which I sprinkle on as well.
That seems to do the trick.
Haven’t used soda bi carb, but that ingredient is the saviour of souls for heaps of stuff.
I also use a kitty litter in a purple pack that I buy from Coles or Woolies which is clumping and safe to flush away.
