Hello!

Hey mums, I was wondering if anyone else had a internal examination instead of a ultrasound? I will be 8 weeks and 3 days when I get an internal examination done. My dr said he will only send me for a ultrasound if something not right or he thinks it’s twins. How would they know all this from an internal? Thanks.

  • I would first ask the dr to explain this and really ask why the choice for internal exam instead of an ultrasound and speak out your questions and fears

  • I had an internal ultrasound at 5 weeks. I think it was because the internal probe is able to get closer to the tiny fetus.

  • I’d find a new doctor. Sounds kind of creepy. There is no reason for an internal at 8 weeks. Its just a risk of introducing bacteria no matter how clean he is. Anything he wants to know can be seen with an ultrasound which is much safer.

  • I never had an internal examination at all so seems a bit strange to me :/ I would probably see another dr

  • I had one early in pregnancy. They are apparently more accurate and can tell more precisely how pregnant you are, apparently to the day. I had one due to a small bleed to establish if all was ok.

  • I had an internal too but my Dr said it’s now becoming more common to have an internal rather than a standard ultrasound as the results are more accurate in a early pregnancy.

  • A lot of responses here assume you mean an internal ultrasound but you did write examination which i took to mean no equipment, which would be unusual.

  • My 1st pregnancy yes at early weeks because I had bleeding but the 2nd & 3rd I had a normal ultra sound. It’s a bit strange.

  • that internal ultrasound stick, is a standard part of their equipment also and is attached to the ultrasound unit

  • when it’s really early pregnancy, it is a much better ultrasound result from the internal because it’s closer to your womb. i think that’s the standards now days so don’t worry

  • I had both, sometimes they can feel more than what they see on an ultrasound

  • I had an internal exam as well as an ultrasound…

  • oh, after reading everyone’s answers maybe it’s not as unusual as I thought, but I never had one.

  • That sounds unusual to me, I’d probably get a second opinion if I were you.

  • I have never had an internal with any of my pregnancies. Only time I had one when I found out I had calcification on my uterus
