Hello!

I was going to make dippy dogs and I can’t seem to locate corn meal in the supermarket. Is there another name?

  • No, they’re not the same. While cornmeal and corn flour are both made from milled, dried corn, they differ in texture completely. Cornmeal feels gritty, while corn flour is fine and smooth. The degree of milling determines the texture of the flour: corn flour is finely ground, while cornmeal is coarsely ground.

  • Corn meal is also known as polenta. I’m not sure if semolina does the same job.

  • No definitely not the same !

  • As said below, corn meal us also known as polenta. If you tried it with cornflour instead, I imagine it would be a claggy mess

  • Corn meal is also known as polenta. Corn flour looks more like plain flour, whereas corn meal looks more like sand.

  • No, they are not the same, certainly different. Corn meal is a lot coarser then corn flour. There would be a completely different flavour too

  • Both are ground corn (maize, as they would have it in Europe). The difference is that corn flour is usually ground to a much finer texture than cornmeal. Therefore you will get different textural results.

  • I use polenta too for this recipe.

  • lol yeah dagwood dogs are great hey!

  • I use polenta too

  • I learnt the difference the hard way :/

  • I am now hankering for a Dagwood Dog – have never heard of the other name for these ‘naughty’ treats. But regardless of name – they are good!

  • There is a difference between corn meal and corn flour. Smaller deli style shops will probably be able to help you out with finding/sourcing corn meal. Dagwood Dogs are such a special treat!

  • woah i just thought that it was cornflour lol

  • Pretty sure there’s a definite difference between corn flour and corn meal. Corn meal is coarser. Try polenta or maybe even semolina. Polenta would be my first choice though
