Hello!

My son (4) has just had his tonsils and adenoids out (Thursday). He is still not really eating much and still getting high temps. I have spoken to the hospital and they just keep saying to monitor him. Has anyone had a child been through this and how long was it till they were back to normal so to speak i.e. eating and drinking normally?

  • Complete recovery take about 2 weeks
For some children, the sore throat gets worse 5 to 8 days after surgery. Gray or white film will appear where the tonsils used to be. About a week after surgery, this film will come off and your child may have a sore throat again for a day. Drinking plenty of fluids will help to decrease the discomfort.
Keep up the pain medication. I used both Paracetamol & Nurofen and alternated that, I also got Oxycodone given by the hospital. Oxycodone can be given every four to six hours, with a maximum of four doses per 24 hours. It is important for you and other carers to record the name of the medication, and the date and time you have given it to keep track of medication usage.

  • I’d go to the gp if you’re concerned

  • If you are at all concerned, I would go see a GP.

  • jeepers I would go to GP, as my son recovered really quickly – yeah, ice cream and jelly for a bit, but no fevers…all the best x

  • Up to a week for mine. As long as you’re getting the fluids into him, he can cope with little food for a while, dehydration from not drinking is not good though. Lots of love and cuddles too. And just keep an eye on him, you’ll soon notice if he’s worse and needs more attention

  • how did you go? take awhile?

  • Just keep encouring fluids and food if you gey really concerned take him to the gp.

  • I would take him back to the dr if he doesn’t improve soon

  • took mine the full 2 weeks and one of mine ended back in hospital for not eating or drinking just keep encouraging

  • My daughter had this same operation 10 weeks ago.. I would suggest you take him to your GP to get antibiotics if he still has a temp going up and down after 10 days.
my daughter didn’t eat properly for over 2 weeks, but I did push her to drink, as long as they have their fluids it can sustain them a little longer..
She lost around 1.5kg in weight in a week and a half and when you only weigh 17kg that’s a lot, but she is now 100% on the road to recovery, eating a lot more, full of energy an sleeping a lot better than she was.. good luck

  • Hi guys thank you so much for your time in answering my question. i thought i would update.
My son had the surgery on the thursday and by the sunday he still had a temp but was coming down with panadol, monday evening we noted that he hadn’t really been to the toilet much and his temp had come down to normal 36.5.
Tuesday morning we tried to wake him but he was very sleep and lethargic so we took him straight to the hospital were he was admitted, doctor was 90% sure he had a infection and was dehydrated so they started him on a drip, blood test showed no infection but they gave him iv antibiotics just to be safe, he was in hospital for 36 hours had 3 bags of fluids put back into him and pleased to report hes now back to his normal self :)

  • High temp in a 4 yo necessitates a visit to the GP, in case there is an injection. My niece found chewing gum helped with saliva flow which helped with her sore throat.

  • I would take him back to your GP just for a check up usually takes at least 14 days to recover but better check with your GP hope your son feels better soon

  • I would get a second opinion from your doctor.

  • My son had his done 2 years ago and only took 2 weeks. I used Pain Stop for the pain.
If he is still getting temps I would see a GP. Good luck poor Boy its not nice.
