Hello!

There are so many different types of prawns. What is the difference? Is one tastier than the others?

  • I love prawns and was browsing at the local seafood shop with my brother before xmas and it was amazing what they seel around the season time . I am fussy about any seafood and must be in Australia due to the waters. Cooked prawns are always dearer than uncooked , and I only know tiger prawns which I trust .

  • I believe the biggest difference is the price! They’re pretty dear

  • I really like the good favourite tiger prawns!

  • To be perfectly honest I love all of them! Prawns-yum!

  • The answer has been well given here already but thought I’d stop by just incase, thanks for sharing.

  • It’s often a personal choice, I like the farmed tigers as they have a less salty taste. Bigger prawns aren’t always as tasty.

  • some are sweeter, and some are farmed, some Ocean caught. I like green king prawn tails, and I cook them in stir fries, soups, fried rice, skewered and simply in garlic butter with a dipping sauce. Always Aussie prawns, as they are sustainably fished and our waters are clean

  • Personal favourite is tiger prawns. Yes they all taste different and can have different textures.

  • I’ve wondered this myself so thanks for asking the question and to those who replied!

  • Good question… I’m an inland dweller so I don’t see many prawns.

  • Banana Prawns are nice and sweet and I think they are great to use for prawn cutlets, lots of flavour. For normal prawns the tiger prawns or crystal bay have really nice flavours with some lemon and rock salt…mmm :)

  • It is definitely down to your taste preference but my favourite is Crystal Bay prawns or we have occasionally local school prawns (Illawarra) & they are full of flavour!

  • Taste is, well, a matter of taste. Some are sweeter and some saltier. Some are a bit firmer flesh.

The best bet is to ask your fishmonger to try anything which you like the look of so you can taste the difference for yourself.
