What are your thoughts about the bought jars of baby foods vs making your own fruit and veggie purees?

  • I’d much prefer home-made foods. You know exactly what is put in them that way. Skip the preservatives, added salt and sugar etc. It’s easy enough to prepare your own and it can always be frozen in individual servings so you’ve always got some on hand. So many different flavour combinations and plenty of inspiration on the net

  • There is nothing wrong with bought baby food these days.
I however, cook up once a week veggies, and freeze them for the week. It is more cost effective this way. However, can’t be bothered with doing fruit as well, (a matter of time) so usually buy fruit purees.

  • The standards of baby food production in Australia is so high, bought baby food is probably as good as home made. But I prefer homemade, I like to know exactly what’s going in there and it makes it easier to identify allergies

  • It really depends on if you have the time to make it. I have made all my bubs puréed food but when we travel I use raffertys garden pouches. If you are going to use bought products just make sure you check the ingredients to ensure its only fruit, veggies and meat so nothing nasty. Bub is gradually coming off purees so has started to eat what we are having for dinner. Don’t worry about what anyone else says, you need to do what works for you.

  • Read the ingredients list of what you buy, this may convince you to make your own, you can pack in more variety, more meat and also have different textures. I make my own but do use the bought stuff to help me when I am out.

  • if you make your own at least you know whats in it but if you work, you probably dont have time

  • When my kids were younger, I usually made my own baby food however, if we were travelling I’d buy the baby food.

  • I always made bulk vegie and fruit purees for dinners and froze them in small containers (some fruits will discolor when frozen). More for the fact that I found it to be so much more cost effective than jars of baby food. I personally see nothing wrong with supermarket bought baby foods but I always did get a little extra smug satisfaction knowing I made all of the meals myself :)

  • I’ve made my own for each of my 3 kids and used store bought pouches as a back up for when we are out and about or travelling. More cost effective to make yourself and not that much more time consuming especially if you just do extra vegies when you cook for yourself. They are not really on purees for that long of a time so gradually they can just start eating what you eat too. I have always loved the convenience of store bought pouches as a backup and having nothing against them. My only concern is the occasional report or recall of baby food products when someone has found something in it (eg shards of glass). It always pays to check the spoon before giving it to bub.
