Hello!

I’m now in my 30’s and have found that over the years my hormones have changed and I can no longer tolerate the contraceptive pill or devices. The symptoms range from terrible moods swings and headaches to feeling ill etc. I also tried the Mirena and was so moody and sooky and feelings of abdominal pressure that I had to have it removed. I have tried the Nuva ring with no success. I used to be able to tolerate Yaz, even at the very expensive cost of it, but even now with that after a month I can’t tolerate it because I get moody and have breast pain and swelling that is so bad I discontinue it. I believe part of it is due to damaged ducts after having severe mastitis that I was hospitalised with, and now any swelling is just excruciating. I have recently been given a prescription for Zoely I think it’s called. If anyone can help with suggestions or if they have been in this situation I’m all ears. I need a solution.

  • At the moment the only thing that works for me is the pill but i can’t take it while breastfeeding. Everything else i have trouble with so right now i take nothing, i need a solution too, its so frustrating!

  • I ended up going for the good old fashioned copper iud. So far it’s been better than everything I have tried in the past, yet a lot of people can’t tolerate it because if they have heavy periods, they can increase. Just goes to show how unique all of our bodies are.

  • Someone’s already mentioned it but look into natural family planning methods. When followed properly they can be reliable as the pill. Depending on where you live there are kind of mini courses (one on one) and they cost a little but but so good for you to know your body and when your fertile/not fertile. I would recommend learning a method properly and not just from Google. If you want to know more I can give you a list of methods and websites.

  • This is a sucky situation, did you find any alternatives?

  • After 5 kids and a husband who says he will but never does get a vasectomy, I’m looking into a Mirena or tubes tied – I don’t want any more surprises like number 5 and I don’t like the pill. Good luck

  • After 6 kids I made the decision to have a tubal ligation at the same time as my c-section, this was for 3 main reasons, one being that we were finished adding to our family, and I also just couldn’t physically or emotionally handle any main form of contraceptives, and lastly my husband has had over 70 operations and I didn’t want to put him thru a vascectomy. It really is such an individual decision, I hope all these answers help.

  • Maybe look at alternative options too.

  • You can speak with your GP and have your hormone levels tested and then see what options you have. I was unable to you female contraception due to my hormones and so my husband ended up opting for a vasectomy.

  • What about your partner having a vasectomy?

  • Best to discuss with your GP. may refer to someone else to look at your options. Good Luck.

  • Speak to your dr. But you may find that the pill is no longer an option. You can learn about your cycle and know your fertile times. Otherwise if you have finished having kids partner having a vasectomy may be a better option that your container foul moods!

  • It’s probably best to chat to your doctor about it. They can best advise you on what may work best. I have read bad things about Yaz so I’m glad you’re not using it now. Good luck.

  • Have you tried the implant implanon if it works its good for 3 years if not well its a shot, but with any you try you should stay on them for 3 months in order for you body to adjust. There are of course exceptions but try to stick it out for 3 months. There is a non hormonal IUD
