Hello!

Help!! My 6month old has out grown her bassinet. We have a cot for her but everytime I put her in it she screams blue murder!!

She will also be going from my room to her own. Any tips?

  • Transitioning can be hard. I never used a bassinet after my eldest for exactly this reason :) The other ones went straight in their cot and also straight into their own room with good monitors of course. I always had a bed in baby’s room in case of sickness, then I would just temporary sleep in baby’s room.
Placing the bassinet in the cot can be a good idea, but sometimes you just have to go through a difficult transition and stick with it.

  • With mine I put their bassinets into the cot for a few nights as they transitioned. But I’ve seen you can’t do this. I’d suggest trying day sleeps in the cot first. Keeping everything the same as bassinet – wrap or sleeping bag, dummy if using, comforter etc. perhaps bub just needs to get used to being in a new room. Do you use white noise? Found my bubs slept anywhere with white noise. Also if bub doesn’t have a comfortor then now is a great time to get one. Have it on you for a day or so then it smells like you and put with bub.
Unfortunately at 6 months and being too big for the bassinet means you’ll just have to persist with the cot. You could also try patting her to sleep or staying next to her for the first few days to reassure bub in new room/cot. Bub will get used to it but it’ll probably be a rough week or so in the meantime.

  • i just did it. i would just pop bub in the cot while asleep and hoped she stayed asleep

  • Thank you ladies for taking the time to help me out, I have taken your advice on board! I wish I. Oils put her bassinet in her cot but unfortunately it’s a Boori urbane and I can not safely put in in there! I have tried putting her bassinet right next to her cot… hopefully it works! She just screams at the moment… perseverance haha

  • To help the transitioning you could place the bassinet basket into the cot during the day time, and then at night. Once the bub is happy in the cot and their own room, take them out of the bassinet and put them in their cot. It takes three days to break/mae a habit so keep trying for a few days before giving up. Sometimes a few days of perseverance can pay off in the long run.

  • Try starting her with days sleeps in the cot in her own room that way its doesn’t seem like too much of a change
