Hello!

My 18 month old is beginning to try and climb onto or even out of everything (coffee table, high chair etc) and most of the time she is successful and I’m frightened she will try and do this during the night from her cot. What age is best to transition from a cot to a bed?

  • In my case 2 years of age is good for that

  • I think around two years of age is a good time.

  • When they start climbing is a good time! Or even just go to a toddler bed so she doesnt get ‘lost’ in her bed.

  • As soon as my kids started to climb out put them in a bed. I would always start off putting them in a bed just for the days sleeps for a couple of days till they got used to it and them did the night sleeps.

  • We moved my daughter when she was about 20 months as we moved out and did not want to put cot in her room for a short time. She loved having a big girls bed in her new room. Can you take the side off the cot and slowly transition to a bed. I found the major change was no problem as there was a lot of other changes at the time and she loved her princess bed.

  • Our son hated the cot so we moved him to a king single with bed rails at 16 months. Really there is no set age, you need to weigh up the pros and cons about which is safer. You can start by taking the cot down and putting her down on the cot mattress on the floor then look at beds.

  • There’s never really a ‘good’ time! But if you think she might be able to climb out of the cot then perhaps now is the time to make the transition. Does your cot convert to a toddler bed, or does the side come off? If so this could be a good start. At least she won’t be climbing out and potentially falling. They usually take a few nights to get used to the extra freedom, but just stay firm that its time for bed and they’ll soon get the message!
