Hello!

We’ve recently been told we can get a free digital electricity meter upgrade. It will send all our usage data to the company in real time. Does anyone else have good and bad points about them?

  • You can see how your electricity is tracking, so it is great.

  • Like rachelvk said, here in Victoria we had no choice and had to have it installed. But it is great to monitor what you use and see if you are saving or not. We check our useage on the computer and find we are saving on what we used the previous year – I guess because the new TV uses less and we are mindful of turning off standby items that we don’t need to leave on like the dishwasher and lights if we are not in that room. Can only give you pros – no cons.

  • I hadn’t heard of these, this is an eye opener.

  • I forgot to say this in my last post I just realised we have had ours for two years,, But for the first year we didnt recieve a bill. Till one day when we were getting solar pannels fitted and they asked to see the last bill so they could help us fit the right system… We then relised we hadnt had a bill in like since it got fitted so we rang them..And had one sent out.. So if you get one just write a note for a few months time to make sure youve got a bill. Its better than getting a huge shock later with a huge one…

  • Oh wow…I had no idea that we had these in Australia.
I know that my friend in the US has one and its brilliant for keeping track of how your bill is going as he can log in online and track his usage. I would love to have one fitted but as we are not in the city we might have to wait a while before it reaches us.

  • We have had one for a long time. we had no choice.
The only problem we had was our electricity was turned off one day and they couldn’t connect to us, so the did an estimate which was $2000 more than normal.

  • Interesting answers on meters readers, not something I have been all that interested in, but am now.

  • With a digital power meter there is no miss readings like some of the old ones.

  • You will have to get one soon enough so there is no point in holding off it makes their life easier to read and your life better knowing there is one less person poking their nose ito your day to day liffe by commming onto your propety….

  • Its meant to be easier for them to read your details and send you the bill as it digital, as far as i can tell there is no negative… but the other day after months possibily a year of been read digitally we actually had some one come and read them meter manually… I guess it was due to the letter we recived the other day saying they now want to change us monthly…. What the…….. we have never been late on a payment… I would love to hear if anyone else has recieved this letter in the mail….. I hope its not to charge us bigger fees…..

  • We have a digital meter. It’s been great to help budget for bills. I can check it anytime and I know what we’ve used so no “bill shock” as they say! It makes you more in control of your bill!

  • Unless different sections of your house are connected to it in areas it will never be 100% accurate. You won’t be able to monitor when your fridge and freezer is using extra power when the fan cuts in and uses extra power. Your freezer in the top or bottom can sometimes cut in at different times.

  • Smart Meters have been mandated and installed in most homes in Victoria, including ours. We have no issues with the technology. I actually like that I can access near real time data online as it helps us to understand what items in our household are energy intensive and where we can make savings.

  • I would have a hard time trusting these. We still have meter readers and even they make mistakes.
