Hello!

I’m after a low salt, low preservative bread so that I can introduce my baby to things like toast and home-made rusks. Does any one know the healthiest type of bread for little ones?

  • My kids had wholemeal, then multigrain. Seeded when they were a bit older. It’s good to expose them from an early age to different flavours, so they’re less likely to get fussy when they’re a bit older.

  • I’ve always been under the impression that wholemeal is best. Fresh from the bakery wouldn’t have preservatives in it.

  • Anything with grains, wholemeal etc is healthier than white bread alone . Depending age of child , I’d probably be careful about the seeds , nuts etc due to allergies . I think better check with the childs doctor to be safe if they are small aged .

  • My boys had multigran when they were babies So I guessmy little lady will too

  • Wholemeal/wholegrain bread is best I think, however you have to be careful since products can be labeled wholemeal when they do not have the correct ratio of fibre to carbohydrate. When seeking a wholemeal product (bread, pasta, breakfast cereal, flour etc.) you should always look for a ratio of no more 5gms of carbohydrate to every gram of fibre. So if it claims 3gms fibre per serve then there should be 15gms carbohydrate (or less). Many own brand wholemeal breads and flours just do not meet this ratio.

  • Great info, thanks for your answers ladies :-)

  • My kids had multigrain

  • It’s not just the ingredients that come into play here. It’s important that your grains are milled in a way that your body can absorb the nutrients they contained. Grains can be quite nutritious but when you buy the more common brands the grains are milled so finely the nutritional value is lost. For this reason I would choose burgen bread or similar. I love using spelt when I can find it. Rye upsets my stomach.

  • I would say rye bread or wholegrain.
