Hello!

Our 2 year old just got grommits put in his ears, and while we didn’t notice any hearing problems before, suddenly his speach is significantly improved. What other effects can we expect grommits to have?

  • You can expect improved hearing, speech and listening, less ear infections (with indeed sometimes gunk leaking out of their ears), improved balance and improved attention spam.

  • My friends son had them after a series of ear infections – he had fluid leaking out of his ears and she said that it was a good thing – the grommets were working and helping the fluid to drain (it was pretty unsightly and I found it a bit grose so thought I’d share in case it happens)

  • oh wow that’s great news hope things improve more

  • I’ve never experienced this before or don’t know anyone that has. Hope all is well

  • You may notice your child will be listening and hearing things missed before. His tone of his speech may change and his volume will become quieter. My son claimed he could breathe through his ears! It does seem so, because the ear/nose canals are open air goes out of the ears if he closed his nose…the things boys do! The specialist explained this to me.
I was told to put Vaseline onto cotton wool and place this in his ears before showering. And the specialist told that a patient found BlueTak in the ear and to cover some of the outer ear, is a good seal to keep water out when swimming. My little fish used this and it worked well. It is amazing how us parents are unaware that our child has hearing loss. I thought he was ignoring us. His speech had a higher pitch. I only noticed when he no longer had this. Good luck

  • Our daughters suddenly became beautifully behaved, we thought that they had been ignoring us, but obviously just weren’t hearing us.They progressed in all ways in leaps and bounds. Being without pain makes for a much happier child ! And their balance and therefore co-ordination can improve as well. You really have to be vigilant about not getting water in their ears.We had silicon ear plugs fitted and a head band made of wetsuit material was great to keep them in place while swimming. Our ENT provided this.A kids shampoo shield shower cap (like a frill) was great and made bathtime so much easier.

  • my mate’s son just had this done too. i am curious about the effects as well. she has just had a check-up with the doc to make sure that it is all going good
