Hello!

What do you cook if you are not a great cook? I would like to help my partner and cook at least 2 nights per week.
Any simple meal ideas please?

  • Cook whatever you like! You’ll only get better if you practice. Not everything will turn out right but you’ll soon learn

  • My daughter could benefit from reading this, her partner claims useless in the kitchen too. I’m not great in the kitchen, but I have a go at anything and everything. Experience is the key, the more you cook, the more you can cook

  • Those 4 ingredients cookbooks are awesome! Easy, healthy and not time consuming. Good luck!

  • so many easy one pot meals out there – discover the joys of a slow cooker, and another family fave is apricot chicken – chicken thighs or breast, on a baking dish, covered in a tin of apricot nectar, sliced mushies, a packet of French onion soup and cook for 40 mins covered in foil and then 30 minutes uncovered on mid oven temp. Serve with boiled rice and steamed green of your choice. Often enough for lunch the next day for us and it is so healthy!

  • Start with some easy pastas and pizzas – they’re not too hard. Good on you for wanting to help out! How’s it going?

  • You could buy a cooked chook from Coles, get some coleslaw, pasta salad, other salad ingredients you like & have chicken & salad.Buy some bread rolls to go with it.Make chicken wraps the next day for lunch or dinner if you have excess chicken. Or you could bake some potatoes & vegies & have a hot chicken dinner instead of salad.

  • I started out buy putting together my favourite ingredients, pasta and spinach with cheese was one if my favourites, then I made a lasagna with the same ingredients but added the sauce and meat. I also use taste.com,

  • See if your local Neighbourhood or community centre is running some simple cooking classes. These might be enough to give you some confidence and get you started on a few basic meals and you can go from there. Good luck!

  • Yes there really are some great simple meals on this site!

  • I’m not the best cook, so I usually search online for recipes and methods.
    It helps a lot :)

  • I’m like you, not a great cook. My husband cooks more often than me but I’m keen to help more now that I’m at home with the baby.
I have found bolognese really easy. Find the simplest recipe as it all enhance tasting the same. Fry the mince & onion then add everything else and let it simmer and you’re done! Use with pasta or add mashed potatoes on top for shepherd’s pie or if you’re really adventurous turn it into lasagne. Also burritos/taccos are SO easy. Cook the mince or chicken with a spice packed and cut up all the veggies.
If you can follow a recipe you can cook anything. I find one pot wonders are easy. Good luck. Be proud of all your meals, masterchef every night is unrealistic!

  • I tend to go on taste.com.au for ideas. My favourite is grandmas curried sausages so simple and quick. Also spag Bol using pasata. Otherwise we have grilled meat and steam veg.

  • Maybe focus on one skill at a time …. like Pasta; Spag Bol, Pasta bake etc then move on to crumbing and frying.

  • tuna mornay is very easy I also add a little onion

  • Im not a great cook either, I cook casseroles & stews because you can use pretty much any meat and vegetables. Spaghetti bolognais is another one. Simple breakfast for dinner.m(eggs and bacon). Chips, salad, toasties.
